A bunch of boats went out the west OC ramp, plus another handfull from other places. Turned the VHF on and listened for the chatter. Sounded pretty good from I could tell. It was pretty flat in the AM and kicked up a bit later on, but it sounded like they found them by then. Bait balls, doubles, bent rods etc.

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum but this post made me register and my account just got activated. We will be coming down from the north. Going to start looking around right around the state line. We will be hanging on 01 and 71 and more than happy to share info. Our boats name is Widowmaker. Give us a call and hopefully we can find them. The weather sure does look good!

Found them Wednesday 5miles North of the line and they were moving north hard, we were 13.2 miles South of OC inlet. Hope you find them again.
Anyone know why they would be moving back North instead of South?

5 miles north of MD/VA line?
Casca Dura
02-03-2012, 01:29 PM
Those fish should be headed south. Sometimes the bite doesn't last long, maybe a day or two. Hopefully if those fish moved south another school will be right behind them. If I was going to be out there, and unfortunately I'm not going to be, I would buddy up with a couple of other boats and do a search. Sat phones can come in very handy. That close to shore a cell phone should work too.

Fished Friday afternoon and finally found some birds a mile of the beach west of winters qtr. We got there at the end of the bite but did get 3 fish casting swim shads to scatter marks (no big schools). Birds disappeared and so did the marks. Radar showed nothing but single birds rest of the day. Guess can't complain too much it was Feb 3rd after all.

Ran South, saw a few birds around the sliver( verazano bridge). Trolled there and picked a 39 incher in 29 feet of water . That was it. Seemed like most fish caught were early. A few guys got some around 33rd st. and I heard the best bite was at the Sea colony early. How did you make out widowmaker?

Slow day guys but it was a pleasure working with you Reel Determined, Fish Tales, Pam's Pride and everybody else that talked to us. We were in the right area. There is so much bait down there right now! We seen a nice fish caught by a couple of gentlemen in a smaller center console (congrats guys!) and did hear of some fish caught on the radio. Most guys sounded like they were skunked. Some had a few and it did sound like a handful of boats whacked them pretty good and were limited out but I couldn't figure out where they were and they didn't want to talk to me on the radio which I totally understand. We ran all the way from Cape May and I watched the sounder the entire ride and didn't see anything. We figured we would start on the lumps inside Fenwick shoal inside the 3 mile line where we seen a few gannets circling. We worked all the way down to about 5.5 miles N. of OCMD inlet where there was a decent amount of boats. We could have missed the bite by an hour or 2 but there was tons of bait there. Then we worked North on some good info from Fish Tales and had even more bait and gannets dive bombing but there were just no bass there. We finished the day up around the Sea Colony and there wasn't much going on there just 5 boats trolling around. We didn't have 1 bite, but it was a great day with a fun crew, beautiful weather and just the fact that we were Striper trolling in February was good enough for me. Hopefully we can get another shot at them down there and good luck to anyone headed out this week. Looking forward to fishing with ya'll down there sometime soon.

Sorry to hear you did not get any. Impressed by your effort, wish it would have payed off for you. Seemed to be hit miss today with the best bite being early from what I gather. Always amazed that these fish even bite with so much food in their belly. Good working with you Widowmaker, hope we can hook up again in the future. Good luck, and I agree just nice to be out fishing in February.

Good job! I'm glad you guys got a couple, I'm sure that made for a great day. Good group of serious anglers out there today and it was nice that everyone worked together to help each other out. I'm ready to make the run down there again if they stick around. If a school of fish finds all that bait it is going to be game on!

Nice to see so many boats out there yesterday. Skunk for me but no doubt the spot was the condos, just didn't get there till almost noon. Radio relatively dead but so was the fishing mid day to late.
Widowmaker I definitely appreciated the updates after you left the crowd and headed to Sea Colony. Was tempted to go but just wasn't relishing the ride back. As it turns out seas calmed down a good amount around 2:30 or 3 and the ride back S was better than it was coming out. First couple hours trolling took constant steering adjustments just to keep relatively straight.

Which size and colors do you use.Stretch lures are not very popular where I normally fish but since fishing oceanside I have heard of alot of fish caught on them.May have to add a couple of them to my trolling spread. How much line do you let out to get desired depth.

zane usually the package will give you a chart showing line size, distance and depth and particular speed. I want to say the 25's run 25 feet with 150' of 30lb mono at 2-3mph. 30's are a LOT bigger but neither is fun to reel in after a long day.

Thanks Rich. I think being there early was key but since I had no idea where to start it took a few hrs before we found the bait. We pulled a Cabo Sunset stretch 25 and 30 and a chartreuse 25 as well as a white/chartreuse Sea Draggin' Mojo and two 9er umbrella rigs in green tiger and chartreuse flake. I'm not really sure what the deal is with the Mojos since we don't use them much up here but I just put a single 9 oz head a country mile back on the shot gun and hoped for the best. Every boat I seen was pulling what seemed like a full spread of Mojos. I guess that's how you do it in Dixie. Anyone know how the Lucky Duck and Game Over did? I don't know them but they look like some heavy hitter boats.
This turned out to be a very informative thread!

something that was brought up while we fished sat... i guess us OC boys need a DE lic to fish the area we were in. after all we were de waters, and md does not have a reciprocation agreement with de. beyond 3 miles we can fish without one, thats no longer de. we fish there for tog and such all the time, then return to oc.
just wanted to give a heads up.

Is that correct, I thought in the ocean license requirement pertains to the port you come into. If you are correct then I was in violation for leaving IRI and fishing MD.

Tony, If you are inside 3 miles, you're in state waters, so state license applies. When we striper fish from VA to NC we always make sure everyone has an NC license.

Thanks for the clarification, I don't fish inshore much ... Well never fish inshore till last week, guess I need to read more about the rules. Guess line extends due east from the state line. What about DE Bay, do you need NJ license to fish on the other side of the line? Thought you just needed to be compliant with NJ fishing regs, havent fished there in while but used to fish the rips. So it seems that I would need DE, MD and NJ licence if i fished the local inshore waters, that is crazy. Boy much simpler fishing the canyons.

02-09-2012, 07:34 AM
i read it the same way hillbilly does. i guess its all about reciprocation. MD has an agreement with VA. so if i, as a lic MD angler want to fish outta chinco or outta oc and off chinco, i dont need the VA lic. I do need to register in VA though. MD and DE do not have an agreement to my knowledge.
tony, your point about landing is well taken, i think that mostly pertains to creel limits and such. here is an example: MD tog is closed in DEC. DE is open. i cannot leave oc, go north and fish DE state waters and return to oc as my port. similarly, even with a DE lic, i cannot leave iri, drive south in dec, fish in MD state waters and return to iri with tog because the MD season is closed. sure, you could arrive iri with them, but if you were caught with tog in the cooler in md waters yopu would be illegal, DE lic or not.
as of 2011, NJ does not have a saltwater lic. DE anglers need to register in NJ before fishing there. dunno if it has changed for 2012 but here is something off the web:
Delaware anglers are advised to register with New Jersey (May 4)
DOVER (May 5, 2011) – The Division of Fish & Wildlife advises Delaware anglers who fish in the New Jersey portion of the Delaware Bay and River, or in New Jersey’s coastal waters, that they are now required to sign up for New Jersey’s Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. The New Jersey registry, which is free, went into effect May 4, and anyone fishing in the state’s marine or tidal fresh waters, or landing their catch in New Jersey, must have the new registration certificate. The only exceptions are anglers under 16 years of age or anyone fishing on a New Jersey-registered for-hire vessel (charter or head-boat). Regardless of what license or permit an angler may hold from another state (including Delaware), or from the federal government, they still are required to register with New Jersey when fishing there. The only way to register for the certificate is through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection website: www.saltwaterregistry.nj.gov. (Please note: Unlike with the Delaware F.I.N. program, there is no toll-free number to call for anglers without Internet access.) Anglers who register will need to print out their registration certificate and have it available for inspection should they be asked by New Jersey enforcement officers.
oh, almost forgot! md used to NOT require a fishing lic to fish outta oc. that has now changed a lic is needed now. that changed last year i think.
