I just got a Spot GPS locator for my birthday from my wife and kids. I hunt and fish alone quite often so this will give her peace of mind. I created an account and tested the unit and it worked as advertised. I was able to track location and receive pre-programmed messages and texts to my wife's phone. Anyone use one of these? Any special considerations on getting the best out of this?

use mine all the time, it just died after 3 seasons, not really mad at it for the price, it was one of the original models, I'll be buying another one, worked 90% of the time I would say.

CaptNemo - Thanks for the reply. What are the situations/locations that you had problems (10% of the time).

not sure, I would think it was working and get home and the wife would say she never got the messages...never sure what the problem was, spot or her phone...if you send enough messages some will go through, I was never worried about it, fished offshore plenty with the spot as my only lifeline, I think its a good piece of equip.

In my ditch bag I have a SPOT , eprib, and a really nice hand held VHF that gives gps cord. I am/will wear my spot on my arm(comes with arm band) or something when it gets snotty.

Hi Steve,
I use my SPOT for my Colorado 2 week DIY archery elk hunts. I send a pre programmed message twice a day to my family from the middle of a national forest miles from the nearest road. As Capt Nemo stated if you send enough messages 90% will go through. The only times I could figure out why the message didn't go through was because of thick tree canopy, which if you read the instructions they tell you not to send it from thick tree cover, but why would I ever read and follow instructions.
I have been very pleased with the Spot, I'm just hoping I never need it for it's intended purpose, I'm running out of live's and good luck.
Your family gave you a nice gift, that will last a long time. Now all we need to do is convince Capt Nemo not to sell his boat and take us off shore fishing for one of those big blue fish he's holding up.
Respectfully,
Kevin

Yes CPT Nemo should do that and we could all take our SPOT and do some testing while offshore. That way we'll have a better chance of one message getting through. Of course while we were testing we could do some fishing. :clapping2:
Thanks for the response.
