My weekend started off great and quickly went south. Got outta work about 2:30pm on friday, boogied home, baited the line and got a call from my first gilfriend.....I dated this girl over eleven years ago, hadn't seen her in almost ten years, but we ran into each other about 3 weeks prior. Told her I was going crabbing, and invited her. Arrives with cold beer[grin], I drop the boat get in and the steering is locked up TIGHT, ...WTF[sad]??? It worked great the day before but low and behold the minute I have any kind of company something goes wrong. I cranked the boat back on the trailer, trot line still baited. We went out for a "few" drinks. Five hours and god knows how many Jim Beams and Miller Lites later we're back at my house. Needless to say no crabbing was done on Sat morning. Sat I fixed the sterring cable, somehow it was just locked up tight, but don't know why? I yanked cable out of hlem and engine, cleaned and re-greased everything, works great. I drop the boat back in Sat evening. Water was all chopped up from boat traffic and a stiff S wind. Did a little searching and found what I exp to be a good early season spot, did well there in years past early on. I couldn't get were I wanted to be so this would have to do. First run, 2 crabs, 2nd.. run 2 crabs......yanked line, cleaned grass off a few baits and moved to antoher spot. Layed in a spot I've never crabbed, 2 runs 5 crabs. At this point I'd had enough, but still had lots of un eaten bait. Pulled the line and wished the best for Sunday morning b/c I was frustrated.....I've never had crabbing results so poor. I almost always do well. Anyway, Sunday morning dawns beautifully and I get to "my" spot, barely beating out another boat my a few minutes. All was good.....WRONG, WAY WRONG. Layed the line and the crabbing was marginal at best the few crabs I caught were coming from all differant areas, deep shallow, sandy, grassy. I'd laid the line to cover differant type of water hoping to pin-point or at least hone in their location. So after about 90 mins I had a weak 1/2 bushel and was tired. Grabbed the light end of the line, pulled up the anchor and cleated it off in order to pop off the necks with the help of the two truck rotors on the heavy end. What a freaking cluster ______ this turned out to be. First attempt line snapped about 200' back, after only snapping off about 50 baits. So I pull in the slack end taking off each bait by hand. I go back to the heavy end and pick the line back up, put it on roller and proceed to run it to it was almost at the end. Cleat it off again and try to pop the necks. The gosh darn W@#$^$%^*^&*)( thing snaps again. This happend once more. After 3 times I conceeded the fact that I'd have to take all the baits off one at a time. There was gobbs of grass on many of the baits. I was stinkin hot and sweaty, forgot my hat, no sun glasses b/c my Coasta Del Mars cracked the other night and I got all these little creeping crawlers form the grass crawling on my arms, feet and hands from dealing with so much grass. You hear all the talk about how grass is the basis for a strong eco-system, well I'm hear to tell ya there right on. I couldn't believe all the little worms, bugs, parasites and whatever else was crawling all over me and my boat. Anyway, my the time I got home I was tired, pissed, hungry, thirsty and itching like a dog with a busted flea colar. Miraculioussly, everything went smoothly at the ramp, and I spent the afternoon eating some well earned hard crabs and playing horseshoes at my sisters graduation party. Anyway, I hope your weekend was better than mine.
