First time ever at Benedict.
Fog allowed for about 50 yard visibility for the first two hours.
On the water at 5:30 and headed up river (crossed under the bridge) and went past the High Voltage towers another half mile or more.
Layed 1800' where I thought it wouldn't conflict with others (where ever they were). Ran it one time and got 9 keepers, so we laid another 1800' another 200 yards farther from shore than the first line. Bad move! The second line was not catching as well as the first (same depth 5') so we picked it up after a couple passes and then decided to move everything into more productive waters.
Another bad move!
Second location was terrible. One crabber reported catching only one crab (straight trot line). I felt we could do better. Not hardly!
Laid both lines again and each run of the line yielded no more than 3 or four, sometimes only one crab.
Took 600' of line off one lay and moved it into 3' - 4' depth. Same results.
Picked at the crabs until we almost filled one basket and decided not continue taking more abuse[sad].
Off the water at 11:00 with enough to make a decent feast for the immediate family of 6.
Think I'll let it heat up this week before trying again.
We did better than some, but not what I'd call close to great.
Crabs were all decent size and heavy. Only a few throw backs. Caught about 6 females. Fog lifted about 10:00 AM and hot sun followed. Back home at 12:45 PM.
Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. TOO many boats, crabbers, Jet-Skis. Satisfied my curiosity.[smile]

Thanks for the report, Jerry. It's comforting to hear that you ARE human. Although, if I filled a basket, I'd be thrilled!!

Bob,
Later in the season everyone should be able to do well. It's going to be a good year for crabbers. Just a wee bit early for late June results.

Nice job any way, Polecat! I'd a thought with the warm spring and mild winter, southern parts of the Western shore would be hot. The funny thing, is you can almost get the same results up here as well. Did a test run yesterday evening on the Patapsco. Laid a line and went and check some eel pots. Came back and picked up a half dozen. Went and check some more, than ran back and hit the line, picked up one..........check some more pots, ran the line a caught 2 more. Picked up at about an hour before dark with a dozen, I let go......and towed a stranded boater in. 2hrs of sporadic crabbing, yielded a dozen. Probably could have picked a half bushel, if I stayed at it. Seems they are everywhere now, but on standby....waiting for something, I guess.[smile]

Seen some drop off, so traps would probably be good.

Now that's a Report! That's how it should be done! Very detailed and not at all selfish!

Sorry you didn't kill em' Jerry....But, at least you got to enjoy some of this Southern Maryland swamplike humidity that's shown up [grin]

Only question I have is did you run traps as well? When I was out yesterday I was doing ok and the guys beside me with a line in the same water didn't get anything......

Tony,
No traps on board today. Just snood lines.
We did see some drop before we could get to them.
Traps/rings would have produced.

Nice report Jerry. The comm pots up here are in deep water (12-18ft). Gett'n closer.
