Just a short fishing report for everyone from the southern NC coast. Hooked up with Tommy and Hal Tuesday for the first steam trip of the season out of OIB. Since the channel is not marked Capt. Brant has been gracious enough to let anyone who was not comfortable with going out the inlet follow his lead out the inlet which we did. By the way he does have the inlet plotted and you can pick up the numbers at the OIB fishing center. We left right at sunrise and at high tide with the shallowest water being 6’6” just outside the inlet.
We made the run out to the Blackjack in a little over two hours and had lines in the water around 9:30am. The water temp was between 74.5 and 75.5 in the area we fished from the Blackjack to the Steeples. On the way out the water was still pretty chilly, between 58-68 inshore. There wasn’t a whole lot of action during the entire day but we did make up for it in quality. We trolled the Blackjack area for a while and finally had a screamer that stole a half a spool of 80 off a 50wide. Tommy fought the fish for about 15 minute and we gaffed a great Wahoo in the 50-55 lb range. After working that area for an hour or so we started trolling toward the steeples and came across a good hump in 200ft of water that came up around 30ft. We marked some bait and no sooner than that happened we hooked a nice Dolphin as Hal reeled him in we had another Dolphin crash the baits and had another on. We did loose Hal’s at the gaff but did boat the second Dolphin which was around 15lbs.
We worked that area over pretty good the rest of the day. We managed to boat a small Blackfin, another small Wahoo and another screamer Wahoo in the 30 to 40 lb class.
Great company on the trip to the stream with great people. We had a pretty choppy ride back in as the winds picked up and made it back Tommy’s boat dock just before sunset. We used Capt. Brants numbers coming back through the inlet and they are right on the money. A thanks to the OIB fishing center for supplying the inlet numbers since there are no cans in the inlet.
And I know you are going to ask what colors were in the spread and we decided to use what worked last year at this time 90 percent of the hookups were on you guessed it Blue and White or White and Blue and one fish on Pink and White. Good fishing everyone looks like it could be another good year of offshore fishing. I will post some pics when I get the chance. Tight lines Mark

Thx for the report. U fish down that way in the summer? I've run out of Lockwood and Southport and would love to hit the deep outside the tower if I had company. What's the catch in July?
