From Hampton Roads, which is the best way to get to Hatteras by water? Dismal Swamp route looks like it takes you too far out of the way and A&C looks more direct through the sounds. How long, time and mileage? How much is no wake?

I've been down and up both, DO NOT TAKE THE DISMAL SWAMP route. It's too shallow, full of snags, etc from the swamp. The route down thru Coinjock is easy.

Check out this link. It has lots of links to Maps, Charts, Things to do etc.
Hope this is helpful.

Link came up with a "can't find page." Most curious about the time difference between ICW and just following the beach oceanside.

Do not take the Dismal Swamp Canal, like the others have said. Once you get beyond Camden Point, Green ICW marker #173, you need to deviate off of the ICW onto a NC course that will take you through the Albemarle Sound, Croatan Sound on the back side of Manteo and the Pamlico Sound to Hatteras. The Maptech Chartkit of the ICW from Norfolk to Florida has this alternate course laid out really well.

I will doign it tomorrow so I will tell you how long when I get back. I have not done it in over 3 years so I am looking forward to Prime Rib at Coinjock.
Last time I remember it was approx. 8 hours inside. 6 Hours Outside. Of course that time changes depending on how you catch the bridges and the Great Bridge locks.

Thank you very much captain. It was actually the other board where you mentioned you were going today that got me thinking about the trip, which I've never made by boat. Hope the fishing will be good...tight lines.

That place on the port side heading south still selling that full slab of meat? Man, I'd take a trip to Coinjock just to experience that again! Back in my more youthful days I had a 21 go-fast and then a 26 aft cabin cruiser. Each year me and the wife and a couple other boats would make our way south. Been as far as Savanna before we ran outa time and had to high tail back north. Ahh the memories.

Funny how everyone remembers that prime rib in Coinjock. One of the finest meals I have ever eaten as well.
