Last year was the only real exception in the history of the tournament.
Some years are better than others.
2 years ago in 2 days I caught 5 makos and too many blue sharks. Biggest Mako was 257 (1st place fish)
Tough to say what will happen this year. If the weather and water and bait are there, the makos will be. Historically speaking, larger makos seem to show up for Mako Mania. The OC tourney has a real mixed bag, and a lot of smaller makos.
I will be fishing on my boat (Last Call)
As a side note, for any that don't know, the Mako Mania and the Tuna round up have moved to fishing center, and the Poor Girls has moved to Sunset. I am sure these will be great improvements for the tourneys.

How long Before Bahia/Fishtales turns into Seacrets and has no tackle shop or charter boats? I basically grew up at that place, and every year there is more liquor and less fishing. I don't think I've bought anything in that tackle shop since Jim Krall left. If Tommy stops workin behind the bar I'll have to find a new place to drink too[sad]

It is tough for me to knock the marina, since I did spend 17 years there. But the short version is that since Steve died, the remaining brothers interests lie elsewhere. Stacie runs a hotel and is a Lawyer, and Shawn is in the bar business. The charter boats that have stayed there are doing ok, and each has their reason for staying, but you will note, the Letereat is for sale and the Virginia is changing owners.
I was hesitant to leave, but too many of my friends told, "come on in the water is fine" in regards to OCFC and Sunset. Looking back I should have moved to OCFC years ago. I also, whole heartedly believe that it was a good move for the tournaments as well.

Franky, I wasn't knockin the place and don't mean to put down the business or any of the boats there. Great place to hang out and I love me that Rocktoberfest tourny in October.

I didn't mean to imply that you were, if anybody is knocking the place its me. Again, its hard for me to do so, cause lets face it, the only person there longer than me was Virginia Fred.
I just think that in the next handful of years it will be a private boast place, with a great bar and grill, good clothing and accessory store, and little yellow rental boats and jet skis. Probably the Judith and the Tortuga.
Ashame to see it happen, but lets face it, from the tournament perspective, and the charter boat business, its tough to beat the OCFC and Sunset.

When is the mako mania?
I'd like to try to do some shark fishing this year. Had some fun with hammerheads last year and ordered a tagging kit.
I'd like to use it.
