View Full Version : So-Called Sportsmen??

This past Saturday, I was invited on a chartered rock trip.
The boat had been out earlier in the day and got skunked.
We went to the captain's favorite haunts- no fish.
Trolled for a short while- no fish.
He found some on the depth/fish finder, and the mate put out some chum.
My daughter was hooked up within five minutes, but it got off.
Just then, I caught a 13-15 incher. 'That's ALMOST a keeper!' I exclaimed, but as the mate was de-hooking the fish, he conked it on the head and said 'IT's a keeper now!' I was at a loss for words. 'I DO NOT KEEP SMALL FISH.' I said. 'It wasn't small- I know my fish'. Well, so do I, and it wasn't legal.
About two minutes later, the same thing happened to another paying customer. This time, the captain was the killer. 'Another keeper', he said. I was disgusted.
Thankfully, just then, we were onto big (read LEGAL) fish.
THis occurred just the day before the article in the Sun describing how Buddy Harrison was caught with numerous undersized fish for the FOURTH TIME.
A true sportsman is aware of how precious the resource is, and how, if the rules THAT WERE WRITTEN FOR EVERYONE aren't followed, there will be NO FISH AT ALL.
Have they forgotten the moratorium? Do they not see the profound impact it has had on the numbers and size of the rock we're catching?
Given the number of So-called 'Sportsmen' out there, I shudder to think of just how long we'll be able to catch rock.
These guys should have their licenses removed, and serve whatever penalties the laws prescribe.

Why were you disgusted? Operation normal for some ex-watermen/charter captains. I stress SOME. Have you read Beautiful Swimmers?
I hope you reported your observations to DNR? All user groups break the law. It's everyones responsibility to protect our resources.

I agree that you should report this, although it may be too late now without the fish having been measured). But at least this would put this guy on DNR's radar (maybe). If we can't polie ourselves, DNR won't be able to help us very much.

By all means read Beautiful Swimmers. Fiction at it's best.

I stated that in my reply but, thanks for the clarification.

Fiction? Ironic that Henry & the Buddy case report the same fiction[tongue]
Oops, I forgot. Reds has deemed me too 'something' to discuss this.

Too bad we can't discuss the last time a rec was caught with 30 illegal fish. Oh Well...

Too late to report, call him out if you are honest.

You're the paying customer and could be subject to fines as well as these knuckleheads. Why take the chance? It's OK to fly in their face and lose your cool. Give them the lecture they deserve. Demand the fish be tossed or return to the dock with a full refund. If they don't oblige report to the DNR all the details. Why put up with this nonsense?

Well maybe not 30 but 15-20 is close enough.

If you care about rockfish survial quit fishing for them in August. I have no clue what the hell Maryland was thinking with that season anyway.

So who as it, anyway. At least we could not use them for further business if we knew who it was.
