9/21 Captain's Meeting

Hard to beat free Beer, wings and other small food! Received our packet and pulled out our fishing spots from the hat!

9/22 Day 1/Session1

Arrived at Dam Neck and on to the beach about 7:15am. Drive down to our spot and at first glance it looked to have a little potential, but overall pretty flat with no cuts. Tide was finishing coming in at that point, and the sun was breaking the clouds turning it into a beautiful day. At 8am lines out and we all had different baits to start. Neils first cast with a small spot head get immediately picked up and pulled. Neil grabs the rod and begins to set the hook, but the fish is gone! Pulls his bait back in and the spot head was crushed and sucked clean. Not much doubt it was a drum. Unfortuneatly that was all she wrote for our spot for the first session, except for two spot that scored us 2 points. Down from us a few spots we saw a 29' striper pulled up and also heard of another striper and a slot drum, so we knew we were behind a bit already.

Day 1/Session 2

Not much to say here as we pulled up to our spot which was flat as a board and the last of the outgoing tide.

Can you say we laid a big SKUNK here!

Did not see to much happening around us during the time as well.

Day 2/Session 1

Darrel our alternate filled in for Neil for Day 2. Arrived at our spot on the beach, and had some ovecasdt skies, but the wind was out of the SW (not good) and steadily was picking up throughout the session. Had a few small bites from tiny blues and other fish, but could not hook up. Darrell manged a spot to pick us up 1 point for the session. Right beside us, they had a nice hole and scored about 20 points on some Popmpano, spot, and kingfish.

Day2/Session 2

This is the spot that Mark and I had fished a few times the week before the tourney, so we knew it held fish, but how would the tide which was almost out and the hard SW winds work aginst us. Nothing for quite some time, then Mark and Keith began picking up points with some fish and Darrell and I waded out to the outer bar and let her rip. I picked up a skate (would not be the same without one on the two days) and Darrell had tiny blues eating away at his bait. Downsizing hooks would not matter as these blues were 6-8 inches and would not have scored anyway. With 20 minutes to go in the session and tourney, my reel starts to sing for about 5 seconds. I jump up grab my rod, reel in the slack set the hook, but she was goned. Must have felt the hook and dropped it! Thought I had pulled a miracle right at the end, but it was not to be. We finished the session with double digit points and geaded off the beach.

Wrap Up

I believe a team from MD won the event (we finished 30th out of 40) and the teams that placed at the top all caught their quality fish the first day and first session. Not too much seperation between many of the teams as a bunch went for broke as we did to win the event, not just place in the Top 10.

Bottom line it sounded like Day 1 / Session 1 made or broke you as that is when the best conditions were to catch fish during the four sessions. We all had a great time and the entire event went very smoothly. Look forward to getting back into the tourney next year.

Again a very grateful thanks to our sponsors Batson Enterprises (Rainshadow) and Fishsticks4u. Both of you were extremely generous with your donations to our team!

Until next year!

Dixie,

Y'all did fine in really tough tourney this year. As it turns out, the top two teams had only 4 points between em. The top team only had 99 points total. So like you said, 1 or two pups or a rockfish and you're in the game. We ended with 27 points in 24th place.

It was cool to fish next to y'all in two different sessions....whoda thunk it? And it was really cool to finally meet bucket, kibaro, Neil, and Darrel. We had fun BSing and sippin a few cold ones! Hope to see y'all on the beach when we can fish where and when we want to.

Hey, at least we did some world class beach cleanup!!![excited]
