Maryland Fishing Reports sponsored by Solomon's Charter Captain's Association. Book a trip and catch BIG striped bass here.
The focus for Maryland anglers is now primarily freshwater fishing, and the fishing shows and sales now underway. The Pocomoke River has given up yellow perch, crappie and pickerel, while anglers braving the elements on the Potomac have located a few nice bass, both smallmouth and largemouth, and an occasional tiger muskie.
(Pictured, bundle up and have a blast with plump yellow perch and other feisty panfish. This dandy perch was caught in the Pocomoke River during a trip with Captain Walt at Light Tackle Charters.)

Maryland Fishing Reports
Maryland Eastern Shore Fishing Reports:
From Captain Walt on the Pocomoke:
This week marked the first time this winter we had to "break a little ice" to get out onto the Pocomoke River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for some ultralight freshwater fishing. But the fish didn't seem to mind at all. Pickerel, Yellow Perch and Crappie have done their best to increase our activity level and keep us warm and happy!! We're finding plenty of bends in the river to get us out of any cold winds that may be blowing, and stretching some 6-pound line and spinning gear on more than our fair share of "sweetwater” fish. This fishing will remain good well into March and we'll launch out of Snow Hill Maryland daily.

Potomac River Fishing Reports:
On the upper Potomac, the mouth of the Dickerson power plant warm-water discharge canal continues to produce good numbers of smallmouth bass, walleye, tiger muskie and channel catfish. The smallmouth prefer small plastic grubs in smoke or black, while the other fish are taking night crawlers, cut bait or live minnows.
At Washington D.C, the river has been high, muddy and cold. With temperatures in the low to mid 30's, bass should be available in shallow water, adjacent to drop-offs, only in the late afternoon after the sun has warmed the water. Small jigs, Silver Buddies and soft plastic baits should be the better choice of lures.
Below the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, “Trash Point" in the mouth of Mattawoman Creek is producing some good fish on plastic grubs, fished on Mustad Finacky Power Lock Hooks. The Morgantown Power Plant discharge is still attracting large schools of stripers. These fish are generally small, with few approaching 18 inches. The fish are taking ˝-ounce bucktails and four-inch Sassy Shads on 1/2 ounce jig heads. Toss one of these baits into the outside edge of the swirling waters, allow it to sink to the bottom, bounce it along with the tide and hang on. If the commercial netters have left any at all, the stripers will do the rest.
Plenty of fishermen will be heading to the Fishermen Flea Market Seminar in New Market on Saturday (Jan. 21), hosted by the Frederick Chapter of MSSA. Everything needed to successfully kickoff your 2012 fishing season will be on display, including tackle for trolling, jigging and livelining for rockfish in Chesapeake Bay; offshore tackle for dolphin, marlin, tuna and sharks; terminal tackle; and lots of other fishing tackle and boating equipment. In addition, informative seminars will be provided by experts such as Captains Chuck Fisher, Walleye Pete Dahlberg, and Joe Riley, and Joe Capozzoli. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Market Volunteer Fire Company at 76 West Main Street.
Ken Penrod recommends that fishermen join him at the NRA Great American Outdoor Show January 27-29 at the E-ventplex at the Frederick Fairgrounds. Ken and his staff of guides (Ken Penrod’s Life Outdoors Unlimited) will be on hand to discuss fishing dates with you and if you have a son between 12 and 18 years old, stop by Ken’s booth (Camp Sycamore) to get the details. The boys learn to fish and shoot, photograph effectively and the GPS and first aid training is worth the price of admission. Ken and other Lowrance Pro Staffers will also man the Lowrance Electronics booth where you can push buttons and get a sonar/GPS lesson on the best products on the market.
There’s something to do for everyone in the family. Youngsters can win cool prizes by participating in the “Little Scavenger Hunt” and bring you antlers for the big buck contest. Ken won the Pennsylvania category last year with a big, mountain buck he shot while hunting from his lodge in Cameron County—the same lodge that he conducts his Summer Youth Camp from. Charlie Culberson of North American Taxidermy mounted the buck for Ken—and Charlie will be at this show assisting Bob Folkrod. Parking is free.
