Fisherman's Island Red Drum Fishing Report by Al B
I'd been talking to Mike, one of my manufacturer's reps, about the Red Drum fishing in our area for over a year, sending him pictures of fish caught in the breakers, sight casting
in open water, and live baiting in the fall. Well, evidently he couldn't take it anymore, so we scheduled a couple "training classes" for our local contractors. We finished yesterday morning and headed across the bay. After lunch at Stingray's, we met my cousin Robert at the Wise Point ramp and eased out between Fisherman's and Smith Islands.
It was around 2PM when we anchored just off a bar that was rising with the ebbing tide. 2' of water off the port side, 10' off the starboard... with several boats anchored outside of us. We fished live hard crabs/busted sooks covering a range of depths.
The first run didn't come tight, but the crushed crab we reeled in was a good sign. We re-baited and tossed it right into his mouth. Didn't even have time to put the reel in gear! Mike took the rod and had a ball fighting a nice Red in shallow water. A quick net, measure, pic and release... 46.5". We missed one other Drum run (again, a crushed crab as evidence), and caught a couple bullfish and dogfish as the tide broke down. Once it turned to flood, the grass was terrible... I understand it cleared shortly after we left. So, with the sun on the horizon, we made our short run back to the ramp.
Congrats Mike on your first ever Red Drum!
