John Travers of the MSSA Frederick chapter took first place with his 228.9 pound big eye tuna caught near the Washington Canyon on the first day of the tournament (pictured left) . Travers fished out of Chincoteague, VA, one of three weigh stations where anglers checked in their fish. Travers will receive $5,910 for first place in the main tournament and second place in two of the skill levels.
Second place went to Steve Ramsey of the Lady Luck, captained by
Tommy Baldwin. Ramsey fished out of Ocean City throughout the tournament. Ramsey shook up the leaderboard late Sunday as he brought in three big eye with a combined weight of 580 pounds. The larger of the three weighed 207.9 pounds securing him second place in the main. The three tuna combined swept all of the skill levels bringing his total earnings to $14,039. This is the largest payout in Tuna-ment history.
Jim Parrotte of the Frederick chapter took third with his 51.2 lbs yellowfin. Parrotte had a fantastic tournament as he consistently checked in yellowfin tuna and dolphin.
The dolphin category, determined by the three heaviest, went to Rob Pellicot of the Frederick chapter. Rob checked in three dolphin with a combined weight of 31.2 pounds, the largest weighing 11.5 pounds. Rob will take home $1,584.
Pete Abbott of the Annapolis chapter and President of the MSSA Scholarship Foundation had a fantastic tournament as he took second place in the 6 fish stringer skill level. Abbott's catch consisted of 6 yellowfin weighing 40, 39, 38, 35.5, 34.7, and 33.1 for a combined weight of 220.3 pound. Pete will receive $1,108 for his efforts.
