According to the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center the Offshore Fleet had good catches of dolphin, blackfin tuna, and an occasional yellowfin. The nearshore fleet had lots of action that produced great catches of Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Finally, the inshore fleet had awesome catches of speckled trout; the Headboat caught plenty of croaker and few sea bass.
Hopefully we can get a break from the rain. For those that have endured the weather they have caught blues and Spanish mackerel off the piers and open boats caught cobia, trout, puppy drum, Tailor blues and Spanish mackerel.

Inshore Boats Report:
Nearshore boats decked loads of Spanish and Bluefish.
Inshore boats reported great catches of Trout.
Offshore Boats Report:
Awesome catches of Dolphin, scattered Yellowfin, Blackfin, a few nice Wahoo and citation Billfish.
According to the North Carolina Fisherman’s Post, surf anglers are seeing sea mullet, bluefish, puppy drum, and croaker around the Nags Head beaches; they’re getting action on rigs baited with bloodworms. Shrimp, and cut baits. Also, you will find lots of sheepshead along the pilings of Little Bridge pier and other hard structures. Additionally, you will still find plenty of blues and Spanish mackerel around the Oregon Inlet while trolling Clarkspoons or working Gotcha plugs and metal lures from the pier.
The billfish are still biting offshore skirted and naked ballyhoo along with baitless trolling plugs; there have been large numbers of white and blue marlin and sailfish releases. The dolphin action continues to be solid offshore with trolling and bailing on squid and cut baits. You will also find good numbers of yellowfin tuna and scattered wahoo.
Boats bottom fishing offshore of the inlet are finding good numbers of tilefish and black sea bass. Closer to the shore anglers are hooking mostly flounder and triggerfish. Additionally, there are still abundant numbers of Spanish mackerel and bluefish off the inlet with large numbers being caught trolling on Clarkspoons.
Northern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore catches improved. Limits of dolphin were caught along with moderate amounts of wahoo, Atlantic bonito, little tunny, amberjack, skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Anglers targeting billfish released many sailfish along with white and blue marlin. Ocracoke and Hatteras anglers fishing on bottom in deep water caught plenty of blueline tilefish, vermilion snapper, blackbelly rosefish, tautog, tripletail, snowy and yellowedge groupers. Midrange anglers fishing three to four miles offshore from Duck northward to the Virginia line, caught striped bass and red drum. King mackerel and the occasional cobia were caught in the six- to ten-mile range from Avon southward.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Fishing activity was heavy due to good catches of spotted seatrout and flounder, with the best results at Oregon Inlet. Shallow water areas near islands and land masses produced the majority of the flounder catches. Spotted seatrout were caught primarily in the morning and evening. Roanoke Sound and the Rose Bay/Swan Quarter areas were the hot spots. Sea mullet were caught throughout the area, along with sheepshead, black drum, and spot.
Piers/Beaches: Anglers landed large amounts of spot and croaker and moderate amounts of other species, including pigfish, pinfish, silver perch, black drum, pompano, blue runners, Spanish mackerel, bluefish. Red drum catches improved from Pea Island southward, and some large fish were reported. Anglers fishing off the end of the piers caught cobia during the night.
Central North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Wahoo and dolphin were landed in good numbers this week, with some of the bigger wahoo starting to show up. The dolphin were only bailers up to 10-pound fish, but were caught in large amounts. King mackerel were also trickling in, with a few in the 30-pound range. Bottom fishing anglers reported catching red porgy, spottail pinfish, sand perch, scup, whitebone porgy, amberjack, black sea bass, scamp, gag grouper, and some large fall-sized vermilion snapper. Closer to shore anglers had luck catching flounder and Spanish mackerel on artificial reefs in the mornings. Flounder were biting on live mullet, mud minnows or bucktails. The Spanish were falling for spoons behind a #1 planer.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: The local inlets produced a fair number of red drum, flounder, lizardfish, pigfish, sea robin, and bluefish for anglers that were bottom fishing. The drum were biting cut menhaden and live mullet on a bottom rig. The flounder were biting live mullet on a Carolina rig. Sheepshead were caught in the N.C. Port turning basin and on most structures in the area. Sea urchins and fiddler crabs were the bait of choice.
Piers/Shore: Anglers fishing in the surf caught black drum, bluefish, pigfish, flounder, sea mullet and Spanish mackerel. The Spanish and blues were caught in the morning using GOT-CHA plugs or spoons. Anglers reported an increase in sea mullet catches during the night using bottom rigs with cut bait.
Southern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Surf City to North Carolina line)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore fishing in the Gulf Stream produced nice wahoo and dolphin. Bottom fishermen targeting groupers yielded limits of red, gag, and scamp groupers, along with assorted reef fish. King mackerel fishing in the 10- to 15-mile range was productive. There were some dolphin and sailfish reports as well. Near-shore reefs produced good catches of flounder; some large Spanish and red drum were reported, also.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Despite numerous rain showers, fishing was good. Fishermen targeting red drum and spotted seatrout reported good fishing during the early morning using top water baits and then switching to live shrimp fished under a popping cork later in the day. Schools of over-the-slot red drum were caught in area inlets. Anglers targeting flounder did not fare as well as ocean fishermen. Black drum and sheepshead were caught around area docks, bridges, and rock jetties.
Piers/Shore: Anglers fishing on area piers caught a mixed summertime bag of fish. Flounder, sea mullet and Spanish mackerel were caught in good numbers along with lower amounts of sea mullet, pompano, and spotted sea trout. There were two king mackerels caught on the Surf City pier. Anglers fishing from the surf reported decent catches of sea mullet and pompano, along with some red and black drum using mole crabs for bait.
