You will also find plenty of spot, sea mullet and croaker in the surf striking on double-hook rigs baited with shrimp, bloodworms, and other baits.
Inshore, the speckled trout are still biting mostly on live baits but you will also have success on a variety of soft plastic lures. You will find sheepshead biting on sand fleas near Little Bridge and Bonner Bridge.
The cobia, Spanish mackerel, and bluefish are still going strong around Oregon Inlet and along the beachfront.
Offshore you will find plenty of billfish action plenty of white marlin and sailfish, and an occasional blue marlin.
Closer to shore, boats near the inlet and along the beachfront will still find plenty of cobia on bucktails or live baits. Finally, bottom fishermen are connecting with some puppy drum, croaker, pinfish, pigfish, spot, bluefish, mostly on shrimp and bloodworms.
Northern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore catches improved. Limits of dolphin were caught along with fair catches of wahoo, Atlantic bonito, little tunny, amberjack, skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Anglers targeting billfish released many sailfish along with white and blue marlin. Ocracoke and Hatteras anglers fishing on bottom in deep water caught a few blueline tilefish and some snowy and yellowedge groupers. Midrange anglers fishing two to three miles offshore from Duck northward to the Virginia line, caught striped bass and red drum. King mackerel and the occasional cobia were caught in the six- to ten-mile range from Avon southward.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Fishing activity was heavy due to good catches of spotted seatrout and flounder, with the best results at Oregon Inlet. Shallow water areas near islands and land masses produced the majority of the flounder catches. Spotted seatrout were caught primarily in the morning and evening. Roanoke Sound and the Rose Bay/Swan Quarter areas were the hot spots, even though the vast majority of the flounder were under size. Sea mullet were caught throughout the area, along with sheepshead, black drum and spot.
Piers/Beaches: Anglers landed plenty of spot and sea mullet with moderate amounts of other species, including pigfish, pinfish, silver perch, black drum, pompano, blue runners, Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Red drum catches improved from Pea Island southward, and some large fish were reported. Anglers fishing off the end of the piers caught cobia during the night.
Central North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore fishing was limited due to rough weather. Anglers that went out returned with catches of wahoo, dolphin and blackfin tuna. Bottom fishing anglers reported catching red porgy, scup, amberjack, gag grouper, tomtate, white grunt and large catches of vermilion snapper. Closer to shore anglers had luck catching Spanish mackerel along Atlantic Beach, Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout. Spanish mackerel were caught using GOT-CHA plugs with some fish in the 4- to five-pound range. Flounder were biting at the near-shore reefs on bucktails tipped with Gulp bait.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Sheepshead were landed at the N.C. Port turning basin and falling for fiddler crabs and sea urchins against the port wall. Flounder were found in the local sounds using a Carolina rig with live mullet and fished around docks and other structures. Red drum were being caught in the Haystacks, Taylors Creek and Bogue Sound on live mullet, cut bait and Gulp baits. Spotted seatrout were caught in the haystacks and in the Neuse River on live shrimp.
Piers/Shore: Anglers fishing from the ocean piers caught black drum, bluefish, croaker, flounder, sea mullet and Spanish mackerel. Spanish mackerel and bluefish were caught using spoons or plugs. Other fish were caught on squid or shrimp fished on the bottom.
Southern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Surf City to North Carolina line)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore fishing in the Gulf Stream produced nice wahoo. Bottom fishermen targeting groupers yielded limits of red, gag and scamp groupers, along with assorted reef fish. King mackerel fishing in the 10- to 15-mile range was productive. There were some dolphin and sailfish reports, as well. Near-shore reefs produced good catches of flounder; some large Spanish and red drum were reported, also.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Despite numerous rain showers, fishing was good. Fishermen targeting red drum and spotted seatrout reported good fishing during the early morning using top water baits and then switching to live shrimp fished under a popping cork later in the day. Schools of over-the-slot red drum were caught in area inlets. Anglers targeting flounder did not fare as well as ocean fishermen. Black drum and sheepshead were caught around area docks, bridges and rock jetties.
Piers/Shore: Anglers fishing on area piers caught a mixed summertime bag of fish. Flounder, sea mullet and Spanish mackerel were caught in good numbers along with lower amounts of sea mullet, pompano and spotted seatrout. There were two king mackerels caught on the Surf City pier. Anglers fishing from the surf reported decent catches of sea mullet and pompano, along with some red and black drum using mole crabs for bait.
