The cobia are southbound from Virginia Beach so now is the time to get in on the action before it’s too late; one boat saw 150 in the ocean at one point. Also, there has been plenty of blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish action. Two boats from the Oregon Fishing Inlet Center caught two grand slams each! Also, anglers have seen a lot of blackfin tuna action with an occasional yellowfin in the mix.

Northern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore catches were fair with dolphin making up the bulk of the catch. Wahoo, amberjack, little tunny, and skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tunas were also landed in fair numbers. Anglers targeting billfish released high numbers of white marlin and a few blue marlin and sailfish. Midrange fishing was sporadic with some very large red drum caught from two to- three miles out from Oregon Inlet northward to the Virginia line. Striped bass were also caught in the same region. Anglers reported incidental catches of cownose rays due to very heavy schooling. King mackerel were caught with increased regularity around the eight- to 10-mile line. Near-shore success improved with more consistent catches of Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Anglers were releasing large numbers of undersized red drum.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Anglers caught large flounder in these waters, and more than 50 percent were of legal size. Oregon Inlet and Swanquarter produced the best catches. Fishermen caught both weakfish and spotted sea trout in the early morning hours at Oregon Inlet's Green Island Slough and in Roanoke Sound. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel were caught just inside the Oregon Inlet Bridge along with a few red drum. Anglers fishing around the pilings caught their share of black drum, sheepshead, and spadefish.
Piers/Beaches: Anglers caught a variety of species, including numerous very small puppy drum. Rough surf made access difficult, but those that fished managed to catch a few pompano, spot, kingfish, croaker, silver perch and assorted other fish. Anglers fishing at the new inlet caught red drum and spotted sea trout on a fairly consistent basis.
Central North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Ocean anglers dealt with rain and swell from the tropics, but managed to land plenty of wahoo, sailfish, blackfin tuna and a few dolphin. Anglers fishing along Cape Lookout Shoals had large catches of Spanish mackerel, bluefish and little tunny. The Spanish and blues were also biting along area beaches on Clarkspoons and live baits. Bottom fishermen reported catches of scup, red porgy, amberjack and large vermilion snapper.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Anglers fishing in area sounds caught many flounder and lizardfish. Taylor’s Creek, the N.C. State Port turning basin, Adam’s Creek, Bogue Sound and the Newport River all produced plenty of large flounder. Red drum were also caught in the same areas, with most fish measuring in the 15- to 26-inch range. Anglers in the Pamlico Sound, near the mouth of the Neuse River, reported hooking large, old red drum while bottom fishing with heavy tackle around depth changes. Puffers, gray trout, pigfish, croaker and a few spot were landed by bottom anglers in Bogue Sound.
Piers/Shore: Spanish mackerel, little tunny, and bluefish were feeding around the ocean piers, and biting GOT-CHA plugs and spoons. Bottom fishermen were catching pompano, sea mullet, pigfish, silver perch, and sheepshead on cut shrimp and squid.
Southern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Surf City to North Carolina line)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: There were no offshore reports due to unfavorable sea conditions. Anglers had been catching wahoo in the Gulf Stream and bottom fishermen were reporting good catches of red, gag, and scamp groupers along with assorted reef fish. Near-shore reefs produced good catches of flounder and large over the slot red drum. The National Marine Fisheries Service will open a mini-season on red snapper for a three-day weekend beginning Sept. 14 and a second weekend beginning Sept. 21. There will be a one-fish bag limit and no size limit.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Fishing was very productive despite gusty winds and numerous rain showers. Flounder fishing in the Cape Fear River from Snow's Cut to Southport was fantastic, and a good number of the fish weighed more than 5 pounds. The flounder were biting on live finger mullet fished on a Carolina Rig around the grassy islands and points. Along with flounder, anglers caught slot-sized red drum and some keeper spotted sea trout. The Little River Rock Jetty produced spotted sea trout and red drum in good numbers. Tarpon fishing in the lower Cape Fear River behind Battery Island, the Point of Bald Head Island and on frying pan shoals were good areas to find tarpon.
Piers/Shore: Pier anglers reported catching a mixed bag of sea mullet, pompano, and bluefish. Anglers targeting flounder with live bait caught a few fish, most of which were legal size. Anglers fishing from the surf were limited due to high surf and strong currents.
