With fall comes cooler water temperatures and low humidity which is creating great wahoo action for offshore anglers. For the most part, the weather has been pretty nice lately but it appears that a cold front will be coming in over the weekend. Hopefully, the wind and the weather will hold and won’t put the fish off the hot bite. Also, he Spanish mackerel are biting well and the king mackerel bite has picked up over the last week.

Northern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Offshore fishing produced great catches of wahoo, along with moderate amounts of amberjack, dolphin, little tunny, skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tunas. Billfish releases were consistent with primarily white marlin and a few blue marlin and sailfish. Midrange anglers reported a modest increase in their catches with some nice red drum caught near the three mile line from Oregon Inlet northward. Striped bass were caught in the same region. Most were of legal size. Near-shore activity was limited due to rough seas. Favorable days yielded some nice Spanish mackerel, along with a few bluefish. Good catches of undersize red drum were reported on a daily basis.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Early morning risers caught their limits of spotted sea trout on most days, especially in the Roanoke Sound, Swan Quarter and Rose Bay areas. Flounder catches rebounded and there were more favorable keeper ratios. Shallow, warm water areas near islands and shorelines proved to be the optimum locations. The Oregon Inlet Bridge pilings produced some very large sheepshead along with black drum, spadefish, black seabass and needlefish.
Piers/ Beaches: Anglers released high numbers of undersize red drum. Some anglers reported releasing up to 60 per trip. A variety of other fish were caught in fair numbers, including spot, kingfish, puffers, pinfish, pigfish, silver perch, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, black drum, lizardfish, weakfish, sea robins, skates, rays and assorted sharks.
Central North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Ocean anglers caught plenty of wahoo, some weighing in at 45 pounds, along with some skipjack, blackfin tuna, and dolphin mixed in. Sailfish releases were numerous, with one boat on the Morehead City waterfront flying six release flags from a single trip. Offshore anglers returned with vermilion snapper, gag grouper, red porgy, triggerfish, spottail pinfish and amberjack. Closer to shore, Spanish mackerel and king mackerel fishermen landed a few fish caught between Cape Lookout and Emerald Isle. Flounder were caught around the artificial reefs on live mullet or Gulp! tipped bucktails.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Fishermen reported catches of flounder, bluefish and lizardfish. The larger flounder were caught in the N.C. Port turning basin and from behind Shackleford Banks using large finger mullet. Bottom anglers caught fall spot around the turning basin and the Radio Island pier. Cut bait and fresh cut bloodworms on a bottom rig did the trick. Anglers fishing the inlets reported catching spot, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, cobia and sea mullet.
Piers/Shore: Ocean pier anglers reported catches of pompano, black drum, bluefish, spot, red drum, flounder, jack crevalle, and Spanish mackerel. Cut shrimp on a bottom rig was the most popular bait, except the spot were biting on bloodworms. The Spanish and blues fell for GOT-CHA plugs or Clarkspoons retrieved at fast speeds.
Southern North Carolina Tidal Waters Fishing Reports (Surf City to North Carolina line)
Summary for the region from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries:
Ocean: Anglers fishing in the Gulf Stream reported good wahoo catches, including fish in the 35- to 50-pound range. Large catches of blackfin tuna were caught by anglers vertical jigging and casting top water plugs. The blackfin were in the 10- to 20-pound range with some larger fish mixed in. Bottom fishing was slow but some charter boats caught limits of gag, scamp, and red groupers, along with a variety of other bottom fish. Near-shore anglers targeting king mackerel reported catches in the Cape Fear River channel as well as Lighthouse Rock. Flounder and over-the-slot red drum were caught in good numbers along with gray trout on near-shore reefs.
Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Fishing was productive for anglers targeting red drum and flounder. The best catches came from the Carolina Beach area, lower Cape Fear River and the Little River rock jetty. Several citation-size flounder were reported, along with good numbers of slot-size red drum. Spotted sea trout were also caught, with the best catches coming from Carolina Beach Inlet and the Little River rock jetty.
Piers/Shore: Area piers reported large pompano, sea mullets, along with good numbers of bluefish and Spanish mackerel. Lesser amounts of red and black drum were reported, as well as a few keeper flounder. Surf fishermen fishing around area inlets did well with flounder and red drum using live mullet minnows on a Carolina rig. Good catches of pompano and sea mullets were observed along Pender and Onslow county beaches.
