Magnificent stripers have been beached by surfcasters in Delaware and on Assateague, while a few have been hooked in the Ocean City surf. The majority of the 37- to 44-inch striped bass have been taken on bunker. On Chesapeake Bay, an early hot start to the spring season has been followed by a significant and lengthy slowdown in trolling action. There are many theories as to why, including an abundance of May worms which striped bass have gorged themselves on, lots of shedding crabs in the shallows for rockfish to devour, and warm weather early combined with a late start to the season.
