Magnificent stripers have been beached by surfcasters in Delaware and on Assateague, while a few have been hooked in the Ocean City surf. The majority of the 37- to 44-inch striped bass have been taken on bunker. On Chesapeake Bay, an early hot start to the spring season has been followed by a significant and lengthy slowdown in trolling action. There are many theories as to why, including an abundance of May worms which striped bass have gorged themselves on, lots of shedding crabs in the shallows for rockfish to devour, and warm weather early combined with a late start to the season. ...

Mixed reports have been received from trollers. Plenty of boats have been out on the bay; some have done very well and caught their limits, while others report few fish, or even no fish. Weekend weather was obviously a problem the second day of the season and again this weekend. Umbrella rigs have accounted for many of the stripers caught so far this season. ...

As of Saturday, it’s all about striped bass fishing on Chesapeake Bay! This report was written just prior to Saturday’s official season opener, so we’re looking forward to having much more detailed information in upcoming reports, beginning next week. Most of the captains I have spoken with are expecting an excellent spring season.

While huge stripers to 35 to 50 pounds have been few and far between on Susquehanna Flats this spring, anglers have hooked up with decent numbers of 18- to 28-inch fish. 
Meanwhile, many Chesapeake Bay anglers are focused on Saturday, April 21, and the opening of the springtime Chesapeake Bay trolling season. ...

Big tautog have been caught off Ocean City, while many of the stripers caught and released on Susquehanna Flats so far have been smaller fish of 14 to 24 inches. Water temperatures on the flats have been in the low to mid-50s, and water conditions are good, so anglers remain optimistic that the big fish bite will turn on any day now, perhaps even by the time you read this. Finally. FINALLY! We have received our first reports of consistent big-fish action on Susquehanna Flats! Captain Walt at Light Tackle Charters and his anglers have hooked up with immense stripers to 54 inches. There have been rockfish as small as 14 inches mixed in, and the weather has been less than ideal at times, but it’s great to finally receive word of big rockfish hooked on the flats! The bite should only get better in the days and weeks ahead. Ocean City anglers have caught bluefish, a few stripers and some real nice tog!
