Maryland Fishing Reports sponsored by Solomon's Charter Captain's Association. Book a trip and catch BIG striped bass here.
It’s been relatively quiet on Maryland’s portion of Chesapeake Bay, although some hard core light tackle anglers are finding some striped bass action in the warm water discharges and in and around the Bay Bridge area. There are freshwater opportunities available to anglers during the winter months, and fishermen on the Pocomoke River have been hooking up with crappie, pickerel, and yellow perch. The Potomac River has featured decent wintertime largemouth bass action.

Maryland Eastern Shore Fishing Reports:
From Captain Walt on the Pocomoke:
Captain Walt at Light Tackle Charters keeps on fishing all winter long. Walt and his anglers will fish the Pocomoke River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore until mid to late March, when Walt will head to Havre de Grace to fish Susquehanna Flats for striped bass during the early catch-and-release season. Until then, Walt launches out of Snow Hill, Maryland, and his anglers use ultralight 4- to 6-pound tackle to tangle with crappie, yellow perch, pickerel and an occasional largemouth bass. “This fishing will remain productive for the rest of January, and all of February and March.” Walt said the winding Pocomoke River offers locations where anglers can fish comfortably while enjoying some protection from the wind.
Potomac River Fishing Reports:
Ken Penrod at Life Outdoors Unlimited will provide seminars during the NRA Great American Outdoor Show to be held in Frederick, MD, January 27-29. In addition to lots of useful how-to and where-to fishing information, Ken will also award prizes to seminar attendees, including a Gator Rod, Lowrance GPS or fishfinder, or a fishing lure kit.
Potomac River information provided by Charlie Taylor:
Gravelly Point ramp, although it can be icy in the mornings, normally clears pretty quickly when the sun comes up. Largemouth bass have been holding on drop-offs in 15-18 feet of water . small plastic grubs, liberally doused with fish attractants, have been taking these fish. Silver Buddies and jigging spoons have also been good bets. The slower the bait is fished, the more successful it will be. Letting the bait sit on the bottom motionless will often produce better than moving it. The outflow from Blue Plains has been a local hot spot, giving up bass and crappie. Crappie have been schooled up and taking small minnows and jigs in Washington Channel and the Spoils. For sheer pleasure, try a ¼-ounce Silver Buddy on ultra light tackle with 4- to 6-pound line. Toss this bait into the outflow of Blue Plains sewage treatment plant, allow it to fall and lift the rod tip slowly. Drop the rod tip, take up the slack and lift the rod tip again. Most casts are rewarded by 1- to 3-pound gizzard shad. If you fish the bait fast, you will snag the fish, while slow retrieves produce fish hooked in the mouth. You will know when they are hooked in the
mouth, as they jump clear of the water and make some drag-squealing runs.
Below the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, lots of ramps have been icy in the mornings, but clear pretty quickly. Try to pick areas where the tidal movement is swiftest, as these will be ice free and the fish will be feeding once the sun comes up and warms the water. Channel drop-offs have been producing decent numbers and sizes of largemouth bass for patient anglers who have been fishing small plastic grubs and jig 'n pigs. Some of the better drop-offs have been located at the mouths of most of the feeder creeks, where the feeder creek channel meets the main creek channel. These areas frequently have visible mud lines where the muddy feeder creek water mixes with the clearer main creek water. Fish this mud line with lipless rattling crankbaits and swimming grubs.
