Went out Monday around 2 o clock and decided to try some jigging around the northern neck reef for stripers. Didn't take long before the fish started feeding on top which lasted about 3 hours. Caught over 40 fish on sting silvers and shad. The biggest fish that was caught was 25" on light tackle with a 6" shad. That was definitely a blast.

They finally showed up in good numbers last night. Small and mediums mostly with a few horses thrown in. All caught on raw shrimp in 25 feet of water off of Whiting Creek. Fished from 5:30pm til dark. The more the sun went down the more they bit. I caught 43 in 2 1/2 hours. You're not going to win any tournaments in this hole but you'll definitely scratch out a meal or two, and definitely will have a ball if like some good pullage.

I decided to target Croaker today. Headed out of Cockrell Creek at the mouth of the Great Wicomico. I was armed with Fishbites, squid and Food Lion shrimp. I cut the jumbo shrimp into nice bite size chunks. On my first drift I picked up a nice double including a fat 12 incher. Several more drifts produced nothing. So much for the theory that "once you catch one, you've found the school". I fished multiple G. Wicomico oyster beds. I then went out to the mouth of the river and tried my luck around 4-5 different pound nets. My total catch for 4 plus hours was 4 croaker. I guess you could say the Croaker are here. I just didn't find them in numbers.

Put in at Waterview yesterday at 0900 and went up to 11. Started marking good bait so I put out a 6 rod spread of tandem parachutes. Scaled down the size targeting average sized fish opposed to the trophy size. In about 2.5 hours we managed 8 good stripers(19-32 inches) kept one nice 26 inched for supper. We had doubles with solid fish two times. Then as quickly as the bite turned on, it turned off. We were still marking good fish in the area so I took my own advice and unhooked the trolling gear. I switched over to live eels (smaller ones 10-12inches) and drifted them through the same area that we caught fish trolling. In an hour we had hooked 2 more nice fish(23 and 28). There were no marks on the bottom so I fished two eels under balloons and two with out weights. Very good day on the water. Hope this helps.

Sunday morning fishing by my self I kept a dozen 12" - 14" croakers and released twice as many smaller ones. As an early bonus I caught 4 nice size keeper spot. I used shrimp and blood worms with equal results. Key for me was 20 - 23 ft. on the side of ledges. I worked both sides of the river and caught fish every time I could get on a slope.

Have not posted any reports so far this spring but decided to post pics of my season so far. Of course opening weekend of Striper season was a big blow out for me since I would be fishing by myself. Did help a friend install a hot water heater in his 40ft Silverton that weekend. Next was April 26, 27, & 28. Friday, 26th, lost some rigs near Sandy Pt. area first thought some big fish but after reading reports of others losing rigs in a big snag, I guess that is what got me too. Saturday, 27th, out early by myself and before 7am had a 35" Striper on ice and back to dock before 8am. 35" Pic

Back out after 11am with the friend, Bob, who the weekend before we installed hot water heater. About 12:45pm caught a 39" Striper that he started reeling in but needed some help. 39" Pic

First weekend of May (4th & 5th) was a little windy but went out early by myself and before 8am caught a 34" Striper and back to dock before 9am. Niece and her husband were coming down that afternoon to try to catch a couple more fish but no more were caught and the wind was not nice to us. 34" Pic

May 11th & 12th were windy again. Had plans to go fishing with Valley Girl but we canceled Saturday morning with the early morning thunder storm moving thru. We did go out Sunday morning before the wind started blowing and only caught one fish just shy of 29"

Now to this past weekend, May 18th & 19th. My other son-in-law, Jim, who has not been down to fish for about 5 years wanted to fish. Earlier in week the weather looked ok but as always the forecast got worse as the weekend got close but we came down Friday afternoon to try Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was windy with waves 2ft building to 3ft later in morning. Of course this turned out to be one of my best days Striper trolling in a long time. We could have had a limit by 7:30am but kept holding out for bigger fish. Ended the morning fishing by 11am with a 22", 26", 29" & 31". The 31" was caught while we were getting lines in as the wind got worse. We caught at least 10 more fish smaller than 22 inches. On way back to marina the wiper motor on starboard side went out and motor ran and only stopped when turning off main battery switches and this problem canceled Sunday fishing. I have heard from others that the fog was so bad Sunday that we probably would not have gone out anyhow. Jim said all the fish we reeled in Saturday was two days worth so we were ok with that. Cooler of fish.

Now I am just waiting to figure out how to fix the wiper motor problem. The mechanic I use said if I can get the motor off and remove a wire should solve the problem before they can get up there to fix it. Probably need a new motor which I should be able to replace myself. We still can use my Scout 175 CC this holiday weekend coming up. Might go looking for those Snakeheads in the Yeocomico I have been hearing about. Also waiting for the white perch to show up around the marina's docks.
All fish caught trolling above green buoy #9 up to Ragged Pt. light on Lower Potomac River.
