I know there are a lot of guys that trailer boats from the Western shore of Md to run offshore, so I thought I’d ask my question here….
I have a 250hp 2 stroke Yammahog on my boat, and from what I’ve read from Yamaha and other sources, you shouldn’t mix ethanol and mtbe (non-ethanol) fuel. Here’s the problem…
I live in A.A. County and fish the bay most of the time, and can only get ethanol! But I trailer the boat to Ocean City to fish inshore and offshore, and I like to fill up with the cheaper gas while I’m down there…everything below Cambridge is non-ethanol. How do you avoid mixing the two types if you travel between the two areas? Has anyone had any problems with mixing OC fuel and western shore fuel? Should I not even be concerned?
RL - I feel your pain, living in DE (10% EtOH state) and have kept my boat on MTBE avoiding the related issues with 10% EtOH. I have 184 gallon tank on my 23. I will fish the Ches Bay for Rocks till my tank gets low than its time to fish offshore again and fill up in Salisbury, MD. This is only an issue for me in the spring the rest of time I’m fishing offshore anyway. It is convenient for me since I have to go through Salisbury whether I’m fishing OC, MD or points south.
Regulator...I made it through last year by filling up completely (148 gal.) whenever I was in O.C. but I ran it all out at the end of the season..now I'm empty, and I really don't feel like trailering to Cambridge to get gas for the spring season up here!
I filled up at the MD/VA line at that Farm store for 2.49/gal. Figured it will last me through mullet season as I'm gonna bogart off Shady Grady anyways and drink his beer. Tony, we burned 75 gallons, what did you burn?
First things first. Ensure you have a 10 micron fuel water separator installed. This will be in addition to your regular gas filter which is either in line, or under the cowling on the front of your Yammie. You can also purchase a filter/funnel (West Marine) that removes the water as you fill up preventing crud going into your tank. Once you switch over to E10, check your fuel/water separator periodically for any deposits. If you get a racor type, or you may have one installed, just drain it occasionally to see if it's cruddy, or has white globules floating in it.
Second, they tell you not, I repeat, to not mix the two fuels if you can avoid it. If you absolutely have too, you should ensure that you use most of the MTBE fuel that you can before using E10. An alternative is to pump it out and use it in your car/lawn equip etc. ~not the most ideal of situations, but better than the alternative. There are also companies that will pump it out for you which means you get all the crap out of your tank that inevitably settles there anyway.
Lastly, when you switch to E10, ensure you use Statron to shock your system first (2:1 ratio I believe @ first) then go to using it regularly w/ every fill up as prescribed on the back. We, unfortunately, got the E10 down here in VA Beach last summer, and there was no avoiding it.
I have two Y225-4 strokes, and have been successful thus far using the above methods; my generator, on the other hand, got the E10 bug bad; another story for another time. You may have different results, but best of luck.
Catch 'em up.

I think is inevitable that E10 fuel is going to replace MTBE every where, so might not be a bad time to switch over.

I don't mind the idea of switching over...it's just gonna be a pain in the azz when I go down to OC with ethanol in the tank...burn some of it off inshore fishing...then I need to top off for an offshore run...
I guess I'll just have to try to plan ahead if I know I'm trailering down...and carry more extra filters than I already do!
I think my problem may be solved, see the link to my post on the chespeake board.
It looks as though the gas on the shore doesn't contain MTBE anymore and therefore no more concern about phase separation. http://www.tidalfish.com/forums/ches...-o-c-fuel.html
