Default Shad fishing was out so I went with Plan B…

Since Shadfest was a no go this morning I switched gears and went to some ponds down around Waldorf. The water was very high and a little cloudy but the fish were still active. A lot of fish were up in the trees with the high water so it was a little tricky getting to some of them.

I ended up with a handful of chunky bluegills, a bunch of decent sized crappies, and a lot of bass. I actually had my best day ever there in terms of quantity and overall size of fish. I probably had a dozen fish between 1 and 2lbs and a handful of fish that were pushing 3lbs.

    Here’s a nice crappie I got on the 3wt…

Here are a couple of the chunky bass…

Cutter, if you’re reading this you’ll get a kick out of this. After a while I switched to the rabbit strip fishhead that you tied for the last OBX Forum swap to see if I could entice some bigger fish. First cast with it and I got an 8 inch crappie. That was a real mouthful for him.

Turned out to be a great day.

Very nice fish. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.

Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun. It was good to get out. It had been a while.

Doug, luckily most of the nicer fish came on the 6wt. The nice bass I got on the 3wt was kind of a happy accident. I was in a spot where there were some nice crappies stacked up and I was throwing a floating wiggle bug with a 10 foot fast sink poly leader. The crappies were eating it up.

A short while later as I was getting ready to move to one of the other ponds I saw a really nice bass cruising the shallows. Good think I didn't hook him. My 4pc 3wt could very well have had some additional sections.

Even the best fishing can't compare to a crappie day on the water! Good stuff, David.
