I need to go to Long Island at some point in the next couple of weeks, and I'd love to get on that river for one of their 4-hour beats. It would probably be a weekday that I'm there, but I might have to head up there without much warning. How far ahead of time would I have to make a reservation to assure I had a beat? Any instruction on the reservation process would be appreciated.
It's been a long time since I fished there (10 years)... but.. during the week is pretty easy. If you can pick a beat, you 100% want the one with the bridge. Above or below works the same... It's good fishing man... I mean real good fishing. I caught a brown on a 22 black ant that went 25 inches. Oddly enough... like I said before...weekdays are pretty wide open. There is a map of the river at the rangers station. I think .....think the bridge area was beat 16?? We would go with 3 guys and take the beats next to each other...so we could switch up after a little while.
Have you ever fished it?
Not too jamed up mid week. Definately want to be close to the parking area (bridge) but it most certainly will be reserved. No wading allowed, and the flow is typical of a chalk stream, so you want to have some heavy nymphs, (as they do not allow shot) to get to the bottom.
Deer are tame!
The fish are easy to catch, not too much challenge there, but plenty of pullage. Clarity is unbelievable.
Have fun.

Speaking of the tame deer... many years ago we were fishing there... Myself and two friends took a short break and ate some italian subs on the bed of my truck... no bs.. my buddy Brian puts his sandwich down and deer walked up and took a bite of it...
Well, I'm up working on Long Island as I write, with a reservation on the Connie for tomorrow morning. Trouble is it looks like rain tomorrow. Also, the fish have apparently been struck with some kind of virus, and the park has ordered that everybody wear (precisely) rubber hip waders without felt bottoms. No exceptions. (I'm trying to find out why this is--very curious.) Which means I'll have to buy a pair of those in town, in addition to a license, grab a motel for tonight, and pray I don't get rained out in the morning. Rather than gear myself up for a huge disappointment, I might just head southward tonight...
