Default Sushi II - Freedive Spearfishing in Hatteras

An awesome day of freedive spearfishing out of Hatteras on the Sushi II. African Pompano, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi, AJs, Rainbow Runner, etc. More fun that you can imagine, and they wear electronic shark repelling systems. Very cool and productive since there is no scuba gear and no bubbles to scare the fish. Now I know how to get those fish marks when they won't come up by normal fishing means!

Check out the report and pics at Fishing Report for Monday, May 28, 2007 .

What kind of visability did they have? I want to try that for tuna!!! Do you have the electronic shark repellers? That would be my biggest fear jumping overboard in the blue water. I got the gun and other equiptment but cant find others crazy enough to do it with me. Martin

They said visibility was about 25 feet up top but got much better about 10-15 feet down. See Shark Shield™ - Home for the one they were all using. They had their own...buy maybe I should get one and try it also. They had one shark come up on them in the blue water and it bolted back down when it go within range. I guess it works. It's a black rope-looking device that hangs off your ankle. Pretty simple and didn't get in their way. It did give them an occasional shock as well, but I guess that's the price you pay to keep the sharks away.

Charley, you didnt get wet? I just got back from takeing [HOT SPOT] to OC. My cell battery went dead, as I left charger home.I see you called,I will call back Tue. The yard finally got the boat right and she ran great on trip down.New motors produced better speed and economy as well. I always wanted to do the spear fishing thing ,just not the greatest breath holder! Is it legal to do with scuba?Think that Mako we had on a couple of years ago in WMO would floss her teeth with that electric gizmo and spit out rubber fins. Pretty cool day, neat to do something differant. congrats on puttin it together for those boys. capt. Ken HOTSPOT SPORTFISHING OC. MD

Ken, Glad to see you got it back in OC and running good. Call me on status of OCTT and WMO. Yea, I wouldn't trust that shark shield if there was a 15 ft mako in the water...Good luck on the makos up there in the coming weeks. Your new boy will enjoy seeing pics of him at the dock in diapers with makos. Charley

    Default blue water

I wouldn't worry to much about sharks in the blue water, the murky water is where I would be concerned, unless you run into a bull.

    Hey Alex,

Yea, occasionally have time to post here. That was a fun trip with you guys and hopefully the first of many on my boat or yours. Thanks for the note. PC Tuna Tourny is tomorrow so lights out now...
