Default Tohatsu Outboards? Opinions? Good? Bad?

I am starting to check out potential replacement motors for a 12 year old Honda. If it needs too much work, I will replace it. I hope to get this season out of her, but you all know how that goes. I have heard good things about Tohatsu's, but, I am open to input on others.
Yamaha too. Honda's were the bomb 12 years ago. Now I know there are other decent motors in both 2 and 4 stroke models.

Thanks in advance. Give me dealer references if you have any please.
    Bmail is on.

We had a Tohatsu a while back but it was stolen off our boat. It was a 15 hp. It was an awesome motor. Are you looking for a big or small motor? As far as I know, all the little motors are doing good.

Nissan/ Tohatsu are the same, just a different name

Mercury small outboards are also now made by Tohatsu

parts can be hard to come by unless there is an OEM dealer in your area. do your research

I don't own either, but I've been hearing good things about Suzuki. I think they are running a 6 year warrenty promotion too.

Talk to Kevin at Caroline Boating Center in Ridgely, MD. He sells Honda and Tohatsu. I think the biggest Tohatsu is 115 hp, I don't know how big you need, but after talking to Kevin you will probably end up with a Tohatsu. He says they sip fuel and has more call backs on the hondas. They are direct inject like the e-tecs, only Tohatsu has been making them a lot longer than Evinrude.

Did you have trouble with your Hondra. I was always convinced that Johnson was a good motor but 4 years ago I purchased a Honda and it has been quiet, ecomonical with no service problens. I've heard good things about Tohatsu but until one of my buds gets one and works it hard I'm staying with Honda.

Buy a Yamaha or one of those new Etec's and you won't go wrong. You might save some money in the short run buying cheap but eventually you'll pay...

there is no better engine made in the smaller horespower size then Tohatsu, had a older 40hp on a little whaler I ran for about 10 yrs before selling and the new owner is still running the same engine, take a look on the back of the commerical boats lots Tohatsu, but beware as stated before parts can be tricky to find..

Also be careful about weight. On smaller boats can be a big issue.
