    Default Newbie to offshore fishing

Hope to give offshore a try Sat. Weather looks good. Can anyone suggest a not so far run from VA beach. Thinking about the "Hotdog" Like to stay within 50 miles.
    Thanks in advanced.

If you're coming out of VA Beach, try the Fingers. You can reach the tip of the 22 fathom finger at about 45 miles from rudee. You can then troll the structure of the 22 and east to the 30 fathom humps and bumps. I do not know if anything is on the Hot Dog but you can ususally scrape something off of there as well.

What kind of boat are you running? How much fuel?

    Glen,
Thanks for the info. I have a 22 ft W/A (1991 Stratos 2250 blue water addition) just repowered with a new Zuke 4stroke (9 hrs). I hold around 85 gallons of fuel. Do you have any GPS #'s?

I know the 4 strokes are efficient but I would be 100% positive on your fuel burn before running 45 miles one way...remember, you'll have a heavier load (more gear) and if it gets rough, your economy will go down as well.

I don't have any numbers at home (all are on my gps). I'm sure someone can chime in with some specific numbers.

Do you have a good chartplotter as well as other safety stuff?

You will need a off shore chart and maybe a extra gas can. Troll the 21 fathom finger up the ridge, try for the 30 fathom lump and then back out on the 22 fathom finger.

Maryland and Virginia LORAN and GPS Coordinates- shipwrecks, artificial reefs, buoys and popular fishing spots

85 gallons is enough to get you out and back on a good day, but I'd want another 1/3 for rougher weather.

I've run 74 miles off trolled all day and returned on fumes with my 93 gallon tank. I have a reserve that holds 50.

I did an overnighter 2 weeks ago. I burned my main tank and 20 gallons on the reserve coming in. An eyeopener....

I don't see the VA Beach fingers on Craig's list...try these:

    Tip of 21 Finger - 36 53 445N 75 07 719W

    Tip of 22 Finger - 36 51 945N 74 59 458W

    65/65 Finger - 37 00 076N 75 07 719W

The fingers are 36-37 miles from Rudee. Traditionally a great place to find a variety of species. GOOD LUCK!
