Last nignt I went out for a couple of hours. Hit the bridge and the sewer pipe. Managed a couple decent fish -20", but for the most part it was slow going. I decided to hit the rock piles one last time and then it happened. I've heard of snagging seagulls with a lure (hook), but I've never heard of anyone catching one like I did last night. As I was shooting by line out via my forward cast, a gull flew right into the line. My forward loop "lasooed" around one of his legs and he took off. The line peeled off my reel for a few second before I re-directed his flight. After a struggle in the water and a few more water starts, the line finally came free. All I could think about was the crazy stories I've heard/read, but never experienced anything like them until last night. I guess I'll be more careful with gulls flying around overhead.
I bet it pulled a little better than an 18" rockfish.
BTW, I was near the bridge and sewer pipe on Thursday night and did very well. We even found breakers that were playing ping pong with our top water poppers. Good size fish too, even most of the breakers were right around legal. WE released everything and probably out of 40 fish, 1 was sick looking.
Oh yea, bluefish too up to 20". Most of the fish were in about 12' of water.

When I was a kid growing up in the Syracuse NY area, me and a friend frequently fly fished the ponds at the local golf course (owners knew us and didn't care). One evening as the sun was setting I pulled to haul my backcast and it felt like I hooked into a tree, but no trees behind me. Low and behold I hooked my first brown bat. Damn thing was laying on the ground flopping around like crazy. Spooked the crap out of us youngins. Cut the leader as close as we cared to get and it flew away.
Also caught a seagull during last years striper season off Va Beach.
