Fly fishing from the beach (VB)?

Does anyone have any information on productive places to fly fish from the beach in Virginia Beach? I often go to croatan and throw into Rudee ,but i was wondering about other places. Thanks.

You'll probably get better info from the locals, but I've done a bit of flyfishing at Seashore State Park, it faces the mouth of the bay so the waves aren't as big there and you can really wade out at low tide. I've also gone out at the very north end of VB from 89th street but I can't recall the regs there, I don't think you can fish there all day. Good luck!

You may wasnt to check out Crab Creek Outfitters just west of Lynnhaven Inlet bridge on the sout side of highway 60. They gave me good information when I was ther in the Spring a c year ago. One of their suggestions for that time of year was the bay south of their shop, wading. They were not enthusiastic about fishing the ocean front, at that time of year. Looks like a great fishing area but looks like boat country.

Crab Creek is the place to go but Ron who is the resident expert is in the hospital. Here are some tips.

From shore itself the only possablity at Rudie is the beach south side of the inlet, Croatan. Look at the slew formed by the wooden wier that connects the Rock Jetty to shore. Problem is it's a surfing area and there is NO legal place to park. I fish it from a Yak and thats the best way by far. You can ride a bike to the beach and thats a good bet too.

On the North end a real good place are the rock jetties inside Fort Story. Access is the problem here. If you have a DOD sticker you can drive in. If not you can say you are visiting the Lighthouse park in the lot and walk over the dunes. It's a real good spot short cast to edges and always a place to hide from the wind.

The ocean beach itself is pretty much a waste of time for fly rods. If you have to and sometimes I will just to keep my casting up to snuff try a light wind day at twilight. Wade out and cast parallel to the shore retreving a sinking line just outside the surf line. The only structure that holds fish is breaking waves stirring up sand fleas. Small stuff like Whiting Spots and Croakers will move in and feed just a few yards off the sand. It's challenging and probaly not worth a special trip,

Lynnhaven inlet itself is a zoo and should be avoided due to the large numbers of cast netters

However inside the inlet on the Indigo dunes property a very good wading spot has been past the pond through the spoil area. You can wade out a long way and at low tide it's possable to reach the oppisite bank were the water is deep. Park at the small neighborhood park thats in the neighborhood behind the ocean park fire station.

On the bay side work the pilings were the CBBT hits shore in low light and dark.

Thats the extent of possble spots. A Yak will greatly increase your chances. From the public boat ramp at Lynnhaven it's a short paddle to good spots you can get out and wade. There was a Yak tournment yesterday morning and very resectable numbers of puppy drum were caught in the marshes.

Hold off on the Indigo Dunes recomendation. I just learned the owners are enforcing no tresspassing signs. No way to get to the wading spot without crossing there property

That could make it a better fly fishing spot, keep the cast netters and bait fishermen away. It's a very short yak paddle from the boat ramp.
