Thanks for the report, I'm thinking about heading that way either tonight or tomorrow early a.m.
Just got home after a long day in the field in 100 degree weather while walking stream channels and trying to figure out wetlands in a drought. Then topped off a strenuous day with a long evening of fishing. And yet I'm still writing a report. I guess I missed you guys not being in the office today. I'm finally sitting on the couch having a beer and trying to figure out how to write this report quickly.
Got on the water after some severe thunderstorms went through. Bay was flat calm with a decent east wind, flat as a pancake on the eastern shore. Launched at Matapeake at 6pm and was instantly greeted with birds just outside in about 20 fow. Had some hits on BAs then switched to the fly. Couldn't hook up and the birds were playing with me, drawing me further and further out. Before I knew it I was in 50 feet of water and got a phone call. This let my fly sink further and then I started to strip it in for another cast. Looked back at the depth finder and it said I was in 10 feet of water. Strange. Bang, nice 22 inch rock. Bang again. Cool. Then it died. Decided to run to the Pipe north of the bridge. There were a half dozen boats there all working top water over the pipe in about 15' of water and doing well with sub legal size fish. I eventually figured out that the turbulent, fishy looking water just down current from the pipe didn't hold nearly as many fish as directly on top of the pipe where it was calm. I was catching two fish at a time with flies. One fly was a OMC hollow something or other about 6 inches long and the other was a surf candy about 2 inches long. Naturally the larger fish went for the larger fly.
Ran back to Matapeake past sunset and hooked and almost landed a FLOUNDER on a gulp jerk shad on a jig head. Couldn't believe it. Then I trued around and saw the blackest sky even well past sunset. Uh oh!! I made it back to the ramp just as 40 MPH west winds slammed into me. Even when I was protected inside the break wall I was getting beat to heck.
Back home now, tired and thinking of doing it again tomorrow evening. Wife and kids went to the beach for two days with the inlaws so I'm all on my own.![]()

Glad you got back in! I had the pleasure of fishing that area the last two weeks or so with phenomenal top water action (spinning). I was thinking to myself that I would have clobbered them with a crease fly on top. Try the edge of the crab pots, real shallow, but it has given up two 28+ fish, numerous 26, and countless 22" fish. My best tip of the day for you!
