Sunday on the Dead Low Tide

Got on the water around 8 a.m. Sunday morning and fished the Severn for perch and pickerel. First hit the Whitehall Bay creeks and released a few white perch. Then headed upriver and pulled a weedless spoon through the weedbeds off and in Asquith and saw a few more whites. Went upriver to RB and did get into some better action with a dozen more whites; a few nice yellow perch; a 16", 19", and 23" pickerel; and a 5" largemouth bass. Got all my fish on spoons and spinners.

A few questions for the other SRRKC guys.

1.) Has anyone had any luck up in the creeks inside Whitehall? I haven't yet.

2.) How bout those grass beds off Asquith. Looks like great cover, but again, I haven't had great success there.

3.) Real surprised to see the lm bass. Anyone else catchign any?

Caught 7 LM Bass off the shore in the upper River last evening while casting for 15 minutes. Most were 7"-9", one was 12".

P.S.: Talked with some regulars...although still well below where it should be, the fishing in the upper-River is showing signs of picking up. The cool front and rain coming this week should bring interesting changes to that sector.

7 lm? nice! How far upriver we talking? Up or down from Skiiers Island? I caught mine off RB, but I imagine the narrows would be a better (fresher water) bet. Trouble is, there's been a TON of boat traffic every day I've been up there recently.

P.S. - the water in the upper-river is not always more fresh than the lower river, especially when you're talking about the lower-river creeks. This year, I'll bet the the salinity is withing 2ppt throughout the mainstem of the river. Last I heard, Ben Oaks was around 11ppt, Sherwood Forest was around 12ppt.

I took my kayak out last evening for two hours. I tried a few casts in Weems Creek near the launch at a spot where I had caught white perch easily two weeks ago. I had a few bumps but no serious bites. Because of the calm conditions, I headed out to the river and turned right. After about a half hour of paddling, I got to a small embayment with a narrow and shallow opening. It is between Weems and College Creeks, and backs onto Naval Academy property. The water was less than 2' deep in many places but looked very fishy. I worked my way around the several acre pond, catching a handful of white perch on small white jigs with white twister tail and a small chartreuse spinner bait. I would have liked to spend more time there, but dusk was approaching and I still had a half hour of paddling to get back to the ramp before dark. The bird watching was superb, partly because very few boats can get in there. I saw several species of herons, ospreys, kingfishers, ducks, and more.

Last winter, I caught several pickeral and yellow perch in the same pond.

As part of my multi-vessel fishing experience yesterday, I spent two hours near Thomas Pt. in my Parker during the afternoon. I caught one small striper and several 12-14" bluefish that gave a nice pull. The fish would surface in the same general area every few minutes. There was not enough commotion to attract birds -- I just happened to be at the right spot when they surfaced.

Looking ahead to next weekend, I fly to San Diego early on Sat. I expect to take a half day head boat trip on Sun afternoon. The head boats visit a variety of local hot spots along the San Diego coast, from Imperial Beach to La Jolla. I have a possibility of catching a variety of fish including Barracuda, Bonito, Rockfish (a west coast family of bottom dwelling fish -- not striped bass), Calico Bass and Sand Bass. If I catch something, I will try to post a report on the main Tidalfish board.

Chris... The creeks of Whitehall can yeild everything from perch, to pickerel, to rock (and more).
All of the creeks produce, but some areas are better depending on the time of day.
Your best bet is to pick a creek and work it methodically. You'll find em.

Look for shaded tree overhangs and shore grasses for perch and pickerel. Dock pilings produce perch and rock. Try a #2 Mepps Agila or a white curly-tail on a jig head fpr perch and pickerel.
Once it cools down a bit, use topwater baits along the rip-rap, bulkheads, and in the shallows for rock.

That salt pond you fished is officially called Shady Lake. I caught a lot of pickerel there years ago but haven't tried it in a while. Glad you gave it a look. Good luck on the other coast.
