Default LYNNHAVEN BAR NOV 6 VB City Council Meeting UPDATE

VCAN Members & Public Access Supporters,

Virginia Coastal Access Now (VCAN) is going to speak at the Tuesday Nov. 6th 2007 Virginia Beach City Council (VBCC) meeting in support of your right to wade fish Lynnhaven Inlet.

The recently posted and enforced “no swimming or wading” at the base of the Lesner Bridge has restricted your historical public access to this Virginia Coastal waterfront location. VCAN does not agree with the City’s interpretation on and/or random enforcement of this City code. The issuance of tickets for wade fishing at Lynnhaven Inlet and/or the requirement to leave the water is unacceptable.

We ask everyone to please support this effort and, if at all possible, make the VBCC meeting which starts at 6pm.

Should you want to address the Council, you must register to speak by calling the city clerks office at 757-385-4303 before the Nov. 6th VBCC meeting. If you do, just call the clerk’s office and give them your name, address, and phone number to register to speak in the Nov. 6th VBCC public forum.

If you can’t make it to the VBCC meeting, an email to the Council at ctycncl@vbgov.com in support of wade fishing the Lesner Bridge & Lynnhaven Inlet is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark

A reminder that this upcoming Tuesday is the Open Mic session of the Virginia Beach City Council. This item will come up after the formal session of the City Council meeting and the TV cameras are turned off.

As one who has spoken on many occasions at City Council, a couple of tips and suggestions:

    1. When speaking, I've found it best to read from a prepared statement, that way you don't get off track, and start coming out with many Uhhs and Umms.

    2. Stick to your script. Avoid ad-libbing as you can go places where you really don't want to go. You can also end up hurting your effort.

    3. Ask questions of council. If you ask them something, and they respond to your question, for all intents and purposes, the timer is stopped. That means that you are no longer limited to the three minutes that you are originally granted.

    4. If you are representing a group, say so when signing up. That may give you the ten minute clock. Also, if you are speaking for a group, and there are a number of your groups members in the audience, ask them to stand up.

Providing that my work schedule permits, I will be in the audience at the meeting and will acknowledge the requests by those speaking to stand.
