    Default Back to the PAX

made what is probably my last crabbing trip this year, hit the Pax ,Benedict, with fellow TF'r Jerry (Polecat) . The weatherman reallly got it wrong yesterday, what a nice day on the water with little wind,
started out in the am in my "go to" fall crabbing spot that has really produced well in past years ,only to find the crabs did not cooperate very well. but there were some there ,just a slow steady pick of crabs for a few hrs, then tapered off to almost nothing, had to relocate the lines to some deeper waters 12-16 ft later in the morn, found some more crabs at that depth, not fast & furious but slow & steady. quit about 2pm with 2 bu of Pax river crabs
still a good day on the water with good company, also met up with Dennis1 ,Nice seeing you out there Dennis.

It's not often I get a chance to be the dipper, but this was one time that I did. As RJ said, it was a beautiful day on the water. We were crabbing for the fun of it and for crabs for ourselves, family & friends.

Saw plenty of small crabs for next season, even caught a doubler (peeler). Did not see but a handful of other crabbers. Steamed them critters last night and found them to be fully packed with Patuxent "sweet meat".

Thanks again Rich for the invite.

Good job. You guys really know how to rub it in. Decided to wait to go out of Broomes to pick the better "wind" day. Missed a perfect day and now they're posting Gale warnings for tomorrow.

Will make SUN my last trip out of Broomes and may hit your spot up at Benedict if nothing goin south. Thanks, see ya.

    Herb,
We definitely left a few for you and others to enjoy. We saw a few drop off the baits in sections of very clear water, but for the most part, they were hanging on like it was their last supper.... which it turned out to be.

    Go get 'em!!!

I think the problem was the 2 of you in the same boat . The crabs heard about it and hid out . The 2 bushels you guys caught were the dummies or that couldn't read or didn't get their copy of the "CRAB GAZETTE " which had an article warning all crabs in the PAX that you 2 would be combining your expertise on the same boat . That would scare the hell out of me if I was a crab .

To me, dumb crabs taste just the same as smart crabs taste. Not at all like chicken, but very, very good!

RJ's magic net and expert locating abilities is what put the crabs in our baskets. I just went along for the ride and provided some manual labor, lunch, and companionship. The rest was easy. The hard part was puting up with the auto traffic.

Note: Best catching was after 10:00 when things warmed up a bit. Sleep late if you intend to go. Also, don't put too much faith in Wx forecasts. They usually don't turn out the way they are forecasted... usually better.

I just might go one more time..................

    Thanks for the report guys!
If you don't go, you won't know and you gotta have bait in the water!
I have terminal Crabiteis and there is no hope.

Good seeing Rich and Jerry out on the water, thanks to Rich for the info, and after my brother reminded me I hadn't had a chilly one yet, we ended up with about 1 and 1/2 . We could not find them where I had been getting them, even in a deeper spot down river, but the deeper water was the ticket. Man they were good and a great dayt on the water.
