Default Small boat/shore options near CBBT

What opportunities are available for shore fishing or fishing out of a small 16' jon boat near the mouth of the Bay? The reason I ask is because I'm trailering my duck rig to Chincoteague right before Christmas for a hunting trip, and I figured while I'm in the area, I might as well fish for stripers too. Can I fish off the pier on the CBBT? Is it a long run to the 4th island from Kiptopeke or Lynnhaven? Should I fish the concrete ships or Plantation light instead? Am I stupid to take such a small boat out there? Thanks for the help on this one.

    Thomas,

Fishing the CBBT in a small boat is too dicey. If you have an east or light wind, your best bet is to launch at Kip and fish the Concrete Ships which are right there. Lots of 'yakers and small boats fish the ships with eels and have been nailing some big fish, but you can also try dredging with the fly there, too.

    I hope you're enjoying college!

List to the captain. The main bridge is no place for a small boat. But the ships hold fish and so do the inlets on the other side, southern shore.

Chris-Thanks for the recommendations. Concrete ships sounds good. School is great. I was hoping to do some trout fishing in the mountains but the lack of rain we had this fall dried up all the creeks. I just finished exams so I'm headed home tomorrow, and I'm looking to be fishing this weekend. Our Parker 18 just doesn't have the range to make it to the CBBT from Mathews so we'll probably chase birds around the bay. Good luck out there!
