Do a 1/2 day of canal fishing for Peacock bass with Capt. Mark Hall in Miami.....it's a 40 minute ride down 95.
Peacock Bass Fishing Florida-Florida Peacock Bass Guide

Hey guys, I know I have read a few posts about fishing in FL over the past few years. My wife and I are going down to Ft. Lauderdale for a couple days of R&R. I am looking to pack a rod and try for a few hours each day.
Is it possible to freelance around the canals? Are they all private? Can I just pull off the road? I looked into a guide but it is too rich for my blood fishing by myself. I am looking for DIY from the shore with a rental car. I am not looking to drive for over a half hour either if possible.
Thanks!
Mike

there are some cichlids in the canals/lakes just south of Miami Dade airport, you can park at the hotels and walk/explore.
Fish at dark to dawn beachfront, just throw olive over white size 2 clousers, ya never know....
Both great ideas! Thanks fellas. I have always wanted to catch those peacocks and that price is right on target with me!

The canal either side of the road to Everglades city is worth scoping out. Just watch the traffic.
Everglades city itself has a good canoe rental, he will drop you off different places. Inexpensive way to fish the area. Part of the Ivy House B&B

Now that may be up my alley! I will check that B&B out.
Thanks!

Ivy house is a great place. When I was working in South Florida gave up on all the other quick spots to fish from shore around Ft Lauderdale and Miami. It's not far over to Everglades city. Whole different world from SE Florida. Lot less expensive too. If you grew up around here in the 50'& 60's you remember Jeff Dane on Channel 3 and his annual winter trip to Chockoloskee. It's just down the road from Everglades city and the town has changed little since. Since it's a national park the back country has not changed at all.

The main Everglades City Ramp at the bridge is closed and the 2 down the road in Chockoloskee are twenty big ones to use. It's getting tough to find ramps in SW Fl. Seems the private ones are going to the highest bidder.
Try the ramp at Port Of The Islands, about 8 miles north of the road to Everglade on 41. It's a slow first leg but access to many of the fishing spots in the Islands can be had. You can also head towards Marco Island and get into the back country.
