Here is how I fish the shore from ocean View to Va. Beach
First I start with lite tackle something in the 8 to 10 lb line class range like the Daiwa Exceler 2500 paired with a St Croix premier rod 6 1/2 to 7 ft. rated to 6-12lb test line and a lure rating 1/4-5/8 oz. I use 10lb mono I like either Stren Extra strength or Suffix titanium in 10lb test.
I like to toss Berkley gulps in different patterns like the swimming mullet, jerk shad, bait fish, pogy and sand eel. I like to use them in the 3-5 inch range. I use a 1/4-1/2 ounce jig head in the color of red it works for me the best. The Gotcha brands will suite you the best. Jig it or drag it along the bottom and wait for that tell tail pull or wiggle that a flounder makes wait a second or two and set the hook (don't use that Bill Dance SON jerk or you will loose the fish.
I also like to use minnows or finger mullet when in season for live bait. I like to rig up a Carolina rig. On the rod mentioned above I like to use either a 1/2 or a 3/4 oz. egg sinker a bead a barrel swivel a short piece of leader material and a live bait hook.
This is how I rig the Carolina Rig:
First I slide the egg sinker on the main line then the bead. Now I tie on the Barrel swivel using a Uni Knot at the other en of the Barrel swivel I tie another Uni Knot with the leader material that is about 8-10 inches long then I tie the hook on using a Uni Knot. As far as what to use for your hook I like a hook that has a straight eye like the Mustad 9175D I like the hook size to be a 1/0 or a 2/0.
I fish this rig with a slow retrieve of the rod and then reel in the slack in the line all the way up to the waters edge you never know when the fish is going to take the bait. When you feel a fish take the bait stop your retrieve lower the rod tip and wait a second or two the set the hook LIGHTLY. Reel the fish in.
