Nice job Mark! Yeah, it did get a little windy this afternoon. I was out early (9-10), and it was just starting to kick up. Keep it up over there. she'll start producing bigger fish.![]()
I looked at the weather last night and decided that I would take a half day of work to try to do some fishing. I hit the river from both the shore and my rowboat since my center console has already been winterized. The fishing gods smiled on me for a change! I landed 5 fish. 4 pike and one white perch. The gators were "17, 16, 16 & 15 inches. The big problem I had in the boat was that I had a 4 ft ruler and my boat is less than 4 ft wide so I had a heck of a time measuring. When you guys look at the pictures you can decide if my measurements are off, but I tried to be as accurate as possible. It was pretty windy and I was rowing my butt off while I was out. Finally decided to call it quits when I fell back towards the front of the boat and the bow of my tipsy little boat dipped pretty low just as a nice little swell was passing by. Needless to say my butt and back got soaked. Somehow my ipod manged to stay dry depite me getting pretty wet!!

Thanks Greg! I think It will be tough to come close to your 25" Wilt Chaimberlin model though! That was a beautiful fish!
I notice that you use a snap and wire leader. I may be fooling myself, but I think that I started doing better when I got rid of the snap and started using a 2-ft., 12# flouro leader (attached to the main line with a blood knot or the like). On the other hand, you're obviously having some success as is.

Mark, I'm not in the tournament. But honestly, if I were, it would ONLY be pictures such as your first two that would be excepted if I had anything to say about it. Nothing shy of a crystal clear, up close, easily read measuring board with no breaks, shaded, or hidden areas would count. That's the way all entries should be entered, and even at that, it's still not 100% accurate, but it's about as close as ya can get in this computerized world we live in.
Aren't the white perch a jewel![]()
Goose,
Thank you! I may have to give the flouro leader a try! I am always for catching more fish!!!

Agreed! Especially after meeting this surly, druken group of pirates the other night!Fortunately the 3rd and 4th fish don't really help me in the Derby because I had one 17" two days ago and the 17" & 16" in the first two pictures today which would count as my 3 longest fish. Unfortunately, Greg is killing me for the longest fish with his mini Northern Pike and Chris (DeadLowTide) is killing me for the aggregate length so I just need to start shopping at the same seafood market as them if I want to win this thing
I love the White Perch! Was kind of suprised to see him in so shallow this time of year!

Mark- nice report and some pretty fish.
Don't sweat the measurement/photo.You'll do better on the 24-27 inchers. It's tough trying to get a quick photo so the fish is released alive.
You can put two pieces of 1x4 together to form a Vee.Put a stop at the front and glue your yardstick on the wood.Quick homemade trough.Wet it before you lay a Pickerel in it and it should be much easier. Skip
Great catch, Mark! The wind really did pick up and make things tough, but the photos looked great.

Skip,
Thank you very much! That is a great idea about the 1x4 trough! I may try to build one this weekend!
Chris,
Thank you very much! Yeah the Severn can get pretty big when you are in a 9 ft boat with no weight to it and no ballast! Kind of like a rollercoaster ride! Very nice job on your fish! You definitely set the bar high early!
Mark
Our last boat was a 15-foot Wetzle fiberglass boat with a 15hp, so I know all about fishing from a moveable platform! Even now I find the most wind-protected shore I can when chasing pickerel.
