Looking for some help
Good morning everyone !
I am in need of some good advice ,I am looking into getting a saltwater Fly rod and reel for fishing and have no clue as to what to get ! I have fly fished in streams all my life as a kid and wanted to give the saltwater a try.
Any help would be appreciated.
Mike,
I would suggest an 8 weight outfit or a 9 if you plan to fish the ocean beach. You don't specify how much/how little you're willing to spend, or what type of fishing you'd like to do, so it's hard to make any specific recommendations. We could give you much better answers if we had that info.

Then I would suggest a 9 wt. - as good quality as you can/would like to afford. Before that, however, I would suggest you get some casting instruction to fine tune your casting and test cast some rods to see what action rod you prefer. Most who fish the salt prefer fast action rods for distance, but some prefer more moderate action rods which load a little farther down the blank. Faster rods require a more abrupt casting stroke - moderate rods are a bit more forgiving and some find them more comfortable to cast, especially for long periods. That said, I am one who prefers faster action rods.
For a reel, I would suggest a Ross Cimmaron LA (large arbor). A great reel for a great price. You will need at least one spare spool. If you fish from a boat, you'll use a sinking line of some type mostly and if you wade or fish the beach, you'll need an intermediate line.
Hope that helps some. A fly shop should be able and willing to help if you have one in your area; I don't know where exactly you're located.

Mike - just FYI - Clyde's in Lansdowne has a leftover St. Croix Pro Graphite in 8/9 weight for about $50 bucks. Probably not the best rod to throw a heavy sinking line with, but a good rod nevertheless, especially at that price.
