Just stopping in to say hi. I am slowly, due to cold wx, no heat in my space, building a Tolman 18 Skiff. Seams to be most builders are in the NW but think it will suit me just fine in my area. Not much to look at yet getting my parts glued up and ready to assemble. Have the transom, stringers, bowstem, and am working on what is called the shelfs or shear clamp. building with Okume from Harbor Sales, it is stamped Shelman 1088, looking to keep as lightweight as I can for low horsepower.
Hey Jim, nice looking Simons, have always admired those and it was a real toss up between the Tolman and the Simons. My stringers are cut from LVL lumber a bit heavy but low weight is good. Bow stem is seven layers of Okume laminated then cut actualy everything except the stringers is Okume. Have laid all out to make best use of 4x8 sheets. Yup got my ply at the Eastern Shore Harbor Sales, drove up and hand picked. Need to get back and get a sheet of 1/2 and 4 sheets of 1/4 then will be ready to start the bottom. Up to 50 today in my Bow Roof shed so was able to glue up my scarfed sheer clamp. So far have been using MAS Epoxy. Think I will go with System 3 when I need more. I like the 2-1 mix ratio.
Still cant figure out how to post pics. But nothing much to look at yet. Picked up some 12 and 6mm Okume from CLC Yaks for my bottom pieces. Have to sarf the 12mm to 10 foot and then scarf the 6mm to that, then those parts will get wired together and form the bottom section with the 6mm the bow V. Then another section of 6mm will be laminated to the V section to complete the bottom. The 6mm I picked up was stamped BS 1088 Jobert and was real nice looking when I planed down for the scarf area, but the 12mm was not stamped and not as nice looking when I planed for the scarf, 1 or 2 pin sice voids but not the quality of laminates as the 6mm.
Never even thought about drips, tarps will probably be the way for me. Covered my shed with boat shrink wrap when it was 30 out, did not shrink it. Now that it is getting in to the low 80s I am amazed at how the wrap expands and is very loose on the shed warm days. So looks like I will need to tighten it up on a calm warm day.
