There's a thread on the TF - Fly Fishing forum about spin fishing for shad at Fletchers on the lower Potomac. I posted pics of the shad lures I use. Check it out.

The Shad Run cant get here fast enough. In the past few years I have taken out a bunch of yungins and they have had a blast. All I hear from them is when Im going to take them fishin again.
Maybe some of you can post with the spoon or dart setups that have worked best for you over the years. I know i have been using a red bead swivel and leader setup with a gold or silver spoon.
BTW when is a good indication of the start for the shad, up above ann carrows. I ussually just wait to see post of shad being caught, but is their a certain water temp or tree bloom you guys look for?
Cant wait to take the kids out again this year. We all have a blast.
Thanks, David

I heard when the dogwoods bloom?
Looking forward to reading the replies in this thread. This will be my first year trying for the shad run, and I've been looking forward to it for quite some time.
Check out the NC boards. When they are hot there they will be here in a few weeks of that.
March 21st last year it was starting. By April 1 is was on like Donkey Kong downtown Richmond. Water 50 degrees or better. When water hits 65 degrees both the Shad and Striped ones dump their eggs and are gone faster than you can say Shad. Small white flowering shrub called a shad bush, (I wonder why?). When it blooms which is a week or two ahead of dogwoods, its on. Have fun. You will see me often I hope. Two or three rapidly balding brothers fishing out of a red and silver Lund Alaskan.
Yep within two days of March 20th they are always here.
May be a bit early this year since I hear they are already hitting them pretty good on the Roanoke river in Weldon North Carolina.
Any Guess When They Might Show Up In The Blackwater River?
