Pamlico Sound, what kind of fish?

My cousin just bought some land near Plantation Harbor off of 101. We are heading down this coming week to check things out and thought about doing some fishing. Prob. looking to stay within Pamlico Sound. I don't think the boat is big enough for the BIG water (21'). Not sure if anything is really running yet, but we sure would appreciate any info. as to where we could try dropping a line. Tips and techniques might be helpful to since we usually only fish the Chesapeake Bay.
Also, any good mom and pop type tackle shops around that area? Always like to support the local guys!
