surf fishing corolla

I'll be in the Corolla area April 9-12 and would like any advice on surf fishing. I Have an ORV but don't want to make the run to Cape point every day. What's my best bet for pullage?

I'd look for some bluefish, puppy drum, crokers, and dogsharks. You can drive your orv on the beach right in Corolla. There is 23 miles of beach to drive your truck on from Corolla to the Virgina line.

possible early season spec bite if the water temps are right...look for deep holes close the the beach...fish mirrolures...and grubs...
warmer temps most likely the further you are willing to drive south...

Thanks Chris and Carey. Do I need a permit for beach driving Corolla? Also, I believe there is a salt water license now?

No permit needed to drive on the beach up here, buy your fishing license at Welcome to N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. As far as the dam plovers , what would happen to the hundreds of homes up there if they did, they are only acessable by driving on the beach. Maybe that will be our saving grace, but I tend to doubt it. If they can destroy the whole economy of an island what is a couple hundred $1,000,000 homes mean. Just think when people cant go to these houses any more the plovers and turtles can have a kegger-hottub party and invite all the eco-terrorists that helped make it happen.

Don't be surprised if there isn't some stripers around. I've never done that well with specks on that end of the island. My favorite spots are right behind the Food Lion and a spot just in front of the last house in the ORV Section. Look for a mild north east wind to form a nice hole in front of that house and make for a good drum bite. From my experience its a good idea to just fish where your at. I used to travel down to hattaras island all the time because I thought the fishing was better which is not always the case. One time a made the trip and only caught a skunk only to find out guys were catching 40" + stripers right in front of the house.

Buy you License online if can before you leave. I was down there last thanksgiving and and the tackle shops dodn't have them. I had to wait two days to buy one over the phone.

It would not surpise me to see the activists try to close down the northern beaches too. If I'm not mistaken there is already a wildlife refuge north of the swan area which really concerns me. I really don't want to see a pave road up there either. It would change the area forever. Something tells me that there are going to be alot more cars up there

There is a reserve there,a friend of mine's family donated the land.
They still own a lot of land behind those $1,000,000 houses,a few of
the home owners put fences up behind there houses not knowing
they were blocking access to private property,I hear they area bit
tiffed when they com to vacation an their fences are down.

I just talked to a friend of mine that dose outback tours up there and he said that Plovers are not on the too see list.

My dad has not fished the last couple days due to wind. But the word is its been slow up there.

My parents have a house up there. I've met a few of the new home owners upthere have no respect for their surroundings. I saw a guy that had a fence installed across the road. It didn't stay that way for long. I guess sombody needed to get through. I talked to one woman up there who wanted the new bridge to come across the bay right up to here house because the 2 hour drive that she had to travel was Way too long. I told her that if a paved road was ever built up there, then development would increase and take away from the unique environment up there. She said she didn't care as long as she didn't have to spend two hours in the car. In the house next to her a group of families built a house. Since they didn't have direct beach access (2nd row back) they carved out a path over the dune to the beach through the empty lot in front of them. I told them one day that if they didn't stop the area would look like swan beach and offer no protection for their new house. It turns out it was just easier than walking the 50yds to the ramp. They still do it and when I see tracks on the dune I know the owners are staying there. This is also the same group of people that when they moved into the house they all came over to my parents yard to pick the wild rasberries that grew there. WITHOUT ASKING!! We cut all of them down the next year.

I also know a few locals up there and have herd the same comments concerning plovers. Seems everyone has a good recipie for them. Just wait till they find one of those birds on one of those ocean front lots. When the Gov't tells the owner of that $1,000,000 lot that he can pay taxes there but he can't build a house there.
