Exclamation Meeting tonight on Herring in New Kent Co!

Tonight there is a meeting at 7pm in the Board Room of the Administration Building near the New Kent Court House. The meeting is with the Upper River Waterman's Association, VMRC, VDGIF and local fisherman. It is to discuss the decline of herring and possible regulations which may be placed on them.

The first thing that comes to my mind are predator fish such as large catfish and striped bass.

    FYI.

The first thing that comes to my mind are commercial net fishermen. Sorry, somebody has to say it.

Could very well be overfishing by commercial boys. Could be spawning problems... ???

    Default Herring in NC

Herring in NC are so scarce, they won't let you keep any. If you use them for bait in NC, you better have a receipt showing where you bought them. I know I have noticed a huge decline in Herring in the James and Chick during the last 20 years. Hope they can figure out why and we can all pitch in and help get that fishery back on target.

I guess the thousands and thousands of pounds of herring taken with pound net bellow the dam year after year did not have any thing to do with it. Most of the commercial guys want to blame the problem on any thing other than there self for what they have done.

Some of the scientists beleave that the Bay of Fundy is the source of the decline in spawning herring.

The studies show that most herring go there at one time in there life. The fact that they have poor recruitment coupled with netters/prey and pollution does not give them a chance in our future. Unless some changes are made.

I couldn't make it to the meeting, but was wondering what type of showing was there? What did they talk about or figure out?

what comes to mind next is a back door reason for selling large catfish (help the herring) talked to Greenlee and they are also trying to get the VMRC to regulate the tidal catfish instead of the VDGIF...which u know what that would mean.....

how does someone detect a decline in herring? Aren't they too small to get caught in gill nets?
