June Bug fished out of Oregon Inlet on Friday, May 16 with our transfer crew of mates Dante Soriente and Jay Sweeney plus driver Jim Hutchinson. Sea conditions were not pretty. Southwest winds were 20 to 25 and increased to over 30 knots in the early afternoon.
Boats either found fish or didn't find fish. We were in the latter group unfortunately.
It was one rough day.
On Saturday, only about 8 charter boats ventured out since the winds were even higher. We figured that when 65 footers stay in port maybe we should too. The boats that went did find barely legal Yellowfins and caught 15 or 16 per boat plus a few Mahi but they paid the price. It was a very rough day.
Being true fishermen at heart, we decided that when we can't fish in the boat, we'll fish from a local bridge. That worked! Dante and Jay figured out that the reason that the bridge fishermen were not catching is that the fish were UNDER the bridge. They started casting under the bridge and caught fish on almost each cast. There were many legal size Red Drum and tons of puppy Black Drum along with some Bluefish and two Stripers, one 28 inches.
Dante and Jay fished a total of 17 hours on Saturday at that bridge and caught hundreds of fish. They gave most of the legal sized fish to other people who were fishing or threw them back.
The pictures are too large to upload but we will try to get them compressed.
We brought June Bug back to New Jersey for the summer season yesterday and she's ready to fish. Call 609-685-2839 to check available dates.
