    Default What Kind of Sander

It looks as though I am getting a 1970 13' Boston Whaler that I will be rehabbing, to be used as a crabbing boat.

The biggest issue is going to be the gel coat is shot and really needs to be sanded down all the way, or at least most of the way, to the glass.

What type of sander do I want to use??????

A die Grinder style or an Orbital?

A lot depends on your talent handling the machine. To be on the safe side, stick with orbital and heavy grit paper.
Porter-Cable model 7336SP is a 6" orbital with serious capabilities and is very forgiving to novices like me. 60 grit will cut quickly to start and will leave some scratches. Once you get close, go to a finer grit like 100/120 to get the scratches out and then for a really good finish use finer paper and the 6" soft pad. Don't linger on rolled edges and always keep it moving, moving, moving and by the way, keep it moving!!!
