Headed out of OC at 5:30 with a crew of 4 and pointed toward the North Heyes Canyon south of the Wilmington. Put lines in at 8:30 in about 250 fathoms (71 degrees). Had our first bites within 5 minutes and put a barely legal yft in the box. Released another short and worked our way offshore. No other action until about 11:30 when we had two nice bites with one coming unbuttoned after 30 seconds. A few minutes later put a nice 50+ yft in the boat. No other bites. Picked up at 3 and had a rough ride home in the SW wind. 4 of 5 bites came on green over meat, one on red and white. Fish were eating 4 inch squid.
We had planned to go to the Wilmington on Sat, but noticed the forecast for a rough ride into the SW for the aftersoon, so went to Poormans, where we had lots of pullage of small BFT last week. Only one short yft this time so apparently the schools of small bft have gone north. Our ride home to OC was rough enough, even with a following sea, so I feel your pain from heading right into it. Anyway, nice report, and you caught as many as any other boat that I heard of fishing out of OC. Maybe the yft are yet to show up soon.
