    Default Help fishing around westmoreland

I have reserved a cabin at westmoreland state park, near nimoni cliffs. I plan on taking my boat with me and fishing the potomoc between the 301 bridge and St Clemens island. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for the species in the area and the techniques for catching. I appreciate any help

Most abundant catchable species in that area right now will be croaker. Bottom fishing is the way to go for these guys. Standard bottom (high/low) rig with enough weight to hold bottom (2 ounces should be good). Squid and/or shrimp for bait. If from boat just find a channel edge, if you dont have a depth/fish finder, just look for a line of crab pots and drop her down there. Should be able to catch a mess of fish with no problem.

    Good luck

Hello Sam. I was there last weekend. We couldnt catch a croaker if our life depended on it. However we got into about 20 stripers. Most were throw backs, but the action was fun. We only trolled 2 rods but we found them. Im not very good at computers and typing, but if you wanna give me a call id be glad to hook you up on how and where.oh yea caught a few skates trolling too. My cell is 703 489 1330. Good luck to you.

be very very careful launching a boat there at the state park. If the wind is out of anywhere but the west, and especially coming out of anything easterly you can really have a heck of a time on that ramp. Being where it is and without any type of protection you can quickly beat the hull against the trailer if your not careful. I splashed mine once there and it was the first and last time. In your situation I know you dont have much of a choice as your staying on the park, but main river ramps on the potomac can suck.

Go down river and try off Coles Point. Not that far and fishing has been great. Fish with a running tide. Fake blood worms will help.

    Forgetaboutit,,

Get you some Zara Spooks 5 inch Blue/chrome and redhead /white hit the points early and late .. The stripers are there and they will kill a Spook.. Once you catch one concetrate on that area and you'll find others and don't give up to easily because you can go from a no show to full blown every cast

    Good luck

Thanks for all your informative responses, I feel more confident about my son and I loading up on fish next week. Bottomfeeder 28 I will try to call you this weekend for tips on the striper.

I hope all of you have a great Independence Day.

Cole's will be packed this coming week because of holiday but the crocker bite has been hot especially near St. Clem's island. Try different depths on a moving tide til you find them and troll around the shallows late in the evening/early morn for striped ones.
