Default Busted engine Johnson with VRO

Just got back for my 4th f july vacation in maine. I have a 152 glasstron, with a 70 HP VRO Johnson outboard 2 Stroke, it didn't run very well. i cleaned the carb's and they were filled with oil, and the Carb cover had a puddle of oil at the bottom, so the engine only runs with the manual choke on and shuts off when put in gear. the engine is 1985, i also replaced the sparkplugs, and cleaned and filled my portable tanks as i always do. i think the VRO pump is broken, any opinnion's, also could i unhook the VRO pump and use premixed gas in the engine.

I had a 150 johnson rebuilt and requested that the vro be removed. The mech; had too change the fuel pump because the
vro oil system was part of the original design. I suggest that you do a compression test before you start going any deeper.
    good luck.

You can just plug the oil and run pre mix .The fuel pump and and VRO are the same assembly, but the fuel pump will work with the oil line pluged .

Everything is full of oil and you have to choke the motor to keep it running.....sure sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

Is the fuel pump working correctly? Have you checked the fuel pump pressure?

A leaking fuel line will cause the same over oiling conditions you’re observed.
Have you checked the fuel lines for a possible vacuum leak? A fuel line doesn’t have to leak fuel to be leaking on the suction side of a pump.

Install a standard fuel pump for that model, premix fuel, always use carbon on every tank. Those VRO pumps had there problems.

If the engine only runs with the choke on, carbs need cleaning/rebuilding. Cleaning involves removing the carbs, opening them up, soaking in carb cleaner and blowing dry with air, plus replacing a number of parts. If you're planning to DIY, get an OEM shop manual, otherwise, it's off to a dealer with the motor. VRO pumps were reliable, but yours propably should have been upgraded to VRO II (very reliable) under warranty. If it wasn't. now is the time. Once you get the fuel deal straight, it's easy enough to check the VRO operation. Just mark the oil tank, take the boat out and run it, the check the amount of oil used by adding oil from a graduated measuring device like a measuring cup.
