Anybody have any experience with any of these traps for live spot? Could I expect to catch any in a tributary of the lower Rappahannock off the dock using a trap?
I'd like to use some spot/pinfish for flounder fishing, but I can't seem to catch anything but large croakers.
I made one just like it. It works well on bull minnows also. You should be able to catch spot of the dock if you have a decent water depth or sink it like a crab pot in some of the deeper water in the creek. Use crushed hard crab for bait. I have caught eels dropping it under our floating docks. We stopped @ the spike saturday before going after cobia and caught alot of primo size spot - 4" to 7".

They work well; however, like any other type of fishing, small Spot aren't to be found everywhere. I find ground menhaden to be very effective. Put bait in, close up trap, and drop off the end of your pier, facing the tide. Check it frequently, as they can manage to find their way out if left in the water unattended for a long time.
Joe, I have been thinking about 1 of those traps myself, or I am going to get a plastic drum like they were talking about on the VA Board to keep them alive in. I can catch small spot all day long off the pier. Keeps the young ones occupied also.
Good Luck w/ whatever you do.
Thanks for the responses. I've had no problems catching minnows on crushed crab at the foot of the pier in my minnow trap (and plenty of eels too....hope they're still around come Fall !)
But I'm only catching undersized flounder off the minnows, and I'm hoping that the "big bait, big fish" theory could work if I start using live spot instead and might finally catch some elusive keepers above 19 inches. I just don't have the desire to head all the way to the Cell like I did a few years ago and have been reading on this board of keepers landed inside the Rappahannock.
I may give it a shot and will report back with any success....
Joe, did you have any luck finding any Cobia? Thinking it is time to run to Silver Beach for a shot at Something!!

No cobes seen! We went to silver beach and set up off the mouth of nassawadox creek but only had a few sharks and blues. Saw alot of rays but no cobes. Plenty of small croaker and spot over there as well.

Have you tried Butler's Hole, #8 in the rapp, and the pilons of the whitestonebridge?
Try BIG strips of cutbait and squid together on a SHORT leader and somewhere between 4-5 ounces of weight to keep it down there.
Will try and give that a shot then. I've been using a Rappahannock Sandwich just east of the Whitestone Bridge, but I think the squid strips have likely been too small. I haven't tried cut bait at all, but with all the croaker/bluefish, I think I'll give that a shot too. Appreciate the input...
