Unhappy Sunken boat engine - need some advice

My 25ft went down at the dock overnight when the thruhull busted and the bilge couldnt keep up.

Got the boat out (with the help of Sea Tow) and took it right to Shorts. Engine had only been in under water for 3 hours. The problem is that they couldnt look at it until today.

I have full coverage insurance on the boat but I was wondering what the chances are of salvaging the 225 Merc and 25 kicker if they cant pickle them until 30 hours later?

Would like to get a pair of used 125s anyway and if they total both engines then I can.

Anyone have any experience with submerged engines and insurance?

Yeah, I had a 25' Carolina Classic go down 20 miles offshore. The boat was on the bottom for about two weeks. Everything was totalled. The engine was a Volvo Penta diesel. It siezed while taking on water. The manufacturor used cheap bolts to mount the outdrive, & three of the 6 bolts broke. The insurance company sued Carolina Classic & won. We even got our deductable back.

I had a 40hp fall overboard once and get submerged (don't ask) ... all the mechanics I talked to said the key was to get it running and dried out ASAP. About 30 hrs after the motor got dunked, I got it running and dried it out. It was OK. (This was brackish water.) Good luck.

    Thanks guys

I run out 30-50 miles every weekend and keep my engine immaculate. Shorts marine called me and the engines started but th EFI will need all of the electronics replaced. I have been boating for 20 years and never had to deal with this

They told me the EFI is the worst engine to sink as the computers and electronics run the whole thing. If it was an old Yamaha trials bike 2 stroke it would be a tank and I would repair it.

Hopefully the insurance company will get me a new engine as I just dont trust repairing it along with the kicker.

Sounds like you need new engines, but I'm not an expert. I just don't think I'd trust rebuilds in this scenario.
