twin Johnson 200 Ocean Pro's

Looking for some advice...

I have a pair of 1995 200hp Johnson Ocean Pro's on my boat. They run great while under load at idle or while running at cruising speed. The problem I'm running into is while docking the boat I take her in and out of gear to get her in the slip. While doing so the engines like to cut off when taken OUT of gear... Not every time and not the same engine each time, it can be the starboard or the port at any given time?

Has anyone ever experienced the same thing?

Any advice on what to look for as the cause?

Sounds like your shift switches are getting flakey. The shift switch momentarily disables one bank of the cylinders when you shift out of gear.

The switch is located on the port side next to the shift levers. Follow the wire up to the connector and unplug it. Use a voltmeter and check for continuity between the wire and ground when you active the switch. I found that mine was hanging up from time to time and needed replaced

Thanks Seahunter. I had a conversation yesterday with Tommy at Bills Marine and he seems to give me the same diagnosis. I'm heading down to the boat this evening to hook up the volt meter.

Do your engines do it all the time or only when cold? I have '99 225 ocean pro's and they will work fine while trolling and running. Once I stop some where and let the motors sit for a couple of minutes they will keep dying. I have to advance the throttles to keep them running, but as soon as I take it down to shift into gear they die. The problem seems worse when the motors are already warm. When I first start them at the beginning of the day they will stay on and idle.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

My engine problems take place mostly when warm (at least that I’ve noticed). Seems as though my problems is just the opposite of yours, my like to cut out while taking them out of gear.

After getting feedback from SeaHunter and a local Johnson dealer I went down to my boat last night. I have good power to each switch but they are pretty gunky and dirty which I believe is causing them to stick. When they stick it causes the motor to shut down instead of just killing them for the fraction of a second needed to take them out of gear.

A good cleaning and lube job should do the trick…
